The ruse is that these folks lead "ordinary lives": the father is widowed, remarries, and briefly rekindles a sack-side former flame; the son flirts with the maid; the child bride is cuckolded yet loves and is loved by the son; and the maid has a romp with the butler. Adapted from a mid-'50s Ingmar Bergman film, the play debuted in America in the early '70s and is set in Sweden's turn-of-the-century well-to-do society. Now remastered and heard at the dawn of the millennium, Night Music is a dated yet charmingly affected period piece, abundant in its sweeping theatricality. As an unhappily chaste newlywed, Len Cariou, Broadway's glistening middle-aged dandy, is smashing as Fredrick. Glynis Johns (who always sounds congested and quite cosmopolitan) steals focus as the delightful actress Desiree. A Waltz Through the World of Complicated Romantic Relationships

I grew up 35 west of New York City outside of Somerville, NJ, There are many differences between urban and suburban perspectives, particularly when it comes to the arts. I was lucky to be part of a loving family and grateful for the values I was taught many of which I still live by today, but all of my education of the arts especially my exposure to theater was generated from the excellent programs within the public school system and from my own determination. My grandmother took me to see Angela Landsbury in "Mame" when I was eight years old and I remember feeling an excitement at that performance that has become a life long passion, When I was a sophomore in high school I began reading the Arts and Leisure section of the New York Times and since there was no interest of the subject at home two months before my 16th birthday I initiated probably my only rebellious act as a teenager and started sneaking into the city by train just to go to the theater. This first production of "A Little Night Music" was the second show that I covertly found my way into and although I was too young to really understand the complexity of the entangled romantic relationships in the show the music and performances swept me away and made me yearn to experience and learn more about this dazzling area of the arts. What truly makes this musical unique is that every song is a waltz which only enhances the theme of romance. I can't say enough about the talent in this original cast and although there is a central couple in the storyline it is really an ensemble piece.Although "Send in the Clowns" was the show's breakout song seeing to this day I remember Hermoine Gingold as Madame Armfeldt performing the song "Liasons". "A Weekend in the Country" is one of the greatest first act finales ever written. This soundtrack is entrancing even if you have never seen the show.

Has there ever been a greater nonpareil in the American musical theater--or the theater, period--than Stephen Sondheim? Sondheim--protege of Oscar Hammerstein and student of ultra-modern composers such as Milton Babbitt--has spent the last 40 years crafting perfectly integrated, highly personal music comedy-dramas that are called "musicals" only for want of a better classification. The best of his songs are self-contained music dramas, combining bittersweet harmonies and devilishly clever lyrics that suggest a modern-day collaboration between Maurice Ravel and W.S. Gilbert. "A Little Night Music," Sondheim's musical based on Ingmar Bergman's "Smiles of a Summer Night," is by any standard one of his finest, and in many ways his most moving. A jaded, cynical yet ultimately optimistic view of love and lust among a group of upper-class, fin-de-siecle Swedes, "A Little Night Music" never fails to ravish us with its breathtakingly crafted, funny-sad songs. There are so many masterpieces in this score that it's hard to single out any--"You Must Meet My Wife," "Liaisons," "Every Day a Little Death," "The Miller's Son," and of course the song from the score that everyone knows, "Send in the Clowns." While "A Little Night Music" really should be seen on the stage to get its full impact--the masterful revival at the Kennedy Center in the summer of 2002 is a case in point--the original cast album from 1973 still serves up the bulk of the pleasures from this wonderful show. Len Cariou, Glynis Johns, Hermione Gingold and a superb cast of singing actors bring the show to glorious life on disc.

" A Little Night Music:" The Original

Sometimes we like to think newer is better. Sometimes we are even correct. However, in the case of "A Little Night Music", as performed by the original Broadway cast, one would have difficulty making a case for the newer revival
currently on Broadway. That is not to negate the talents of the likes of Catherine Zeta Jones and Angela Lansbury who
is truly a living legend who is equally at home on stage, film and television. Somehow the original cast seemed more at home with the Sondheim lyric. And, while the original version was lauded as an "adult" musical, it might not seem so
in this day and age. I strongly recommend the 1973 performance of "A Little Night Music" with Glynnis Johns, Hermione
Gingold, Len Cariou, Victoria Mallory and Mark Lambert to name a few. As and for an interesting example of life imitating
art, the role of Anne is played by Ramona Mallory, the daughter of Victoria Mallory, who created the role in 1973, and Mark Lambert. Their romance literally followed the story line of the musical. My suggestion: Listen and enjoy. When
a new cast album is released of the current revival try that one on for size as well. I do like revivals of the original
classics as they bring the originals to a new generation that might otherwise never have the opportunity to enjoy them as we did. This is Living Theater. Long may it live!
