Sir David Willcocks is one of the 20th and 21st centuries' finest and most beloved of all musicians. He has probably done more to bring excellence in choral music to choral singers than any other person who has ever lived, with the possible exception of Robert Shaw. He is always insistent on precise rhythm, intonation, and ensemble, but he achieves it with grace, humor and kindness toward all. Even in his later years, he shows passion and intensity in every musical phrase he conducts. This book presents the Sir David we all know and love, and it is a wonderful tribute by many family members, friends and colleagues, who have undying loyalty to a man who deserves it if anyone ever did. The book is entertaining from start to finish. It will make you laugh, cry and be glad you had an opportunity to be in his presence. If you never did, you will still enjoy the story of a man who lifted music to the highest degree possible.

This book with wonderful conservations with Sir David Willcocks are in his words "magical."! If you want to learn about what choral music was like in England, during the late 40's-to the 90's, then this is right book to purchase. David has been one of my amazing mentors and I especially loved connecting with him. Always the "gentleman" and his spirit comes through in this way, throughout the varied conversations with William Owen detailing the many decades of his vast career. The bonus of this book (which was suggested by fellow choral master and composer, John Rutter) was for David to record some of "his memories" and discuss some of his favourite choral moments and or "cuts" on CD. Just hearing David's amazing voice is such a treat! Highly recommend this book!

David Willcocks is fortunately still with us and this collection of interviews with the famous organist, conductor and choirmaster is an informative and indeed illuminating survey of a long life. We learn something of his early life in Cornwall, as a chorister at Westminster Abbey, scholar at Clifton College and finally student at King's College, Cambridge. The details of his war experience are particularly interesting - they led to his award of the Military Cross. Throughout there is a total absence of self importance, very much in keeping with the personlity of this essentially modest man. A much recommended read - I found it all quite fascinating.
