MOVIE ANALYSIS OF MOVIE A BRIDGE TOO FAR SWOT analysis is the comparison of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. This technique helps an organization to understand the strategies while making an informed decision. “The central purpose is to identify the strategies to exploit external opportunities, counter threats, build on and protect company strengths, and eradicate weakness”[CITATION Hil16 \p 45 \l 1033 ]. SWOT- analysis helps to identify strengths while minimizing threats and focusing onpossible opportunities. A bridge too far is a war movie based on a non-fiction book authored by Cornelius Ryan. The main plot of the movie is focused on the failure of a mission the Operation Market Garden during world war II. Operation market garden was a code name and it took place on September 1944. Market signifies the airborne troops which consisted of 82ndairborne division and 101st airborne division. The garden signifies the ground troops which consisted ofBritish XXX corps and other allied troops from Dutch and Poland. The operation market garden was planned by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery. General Patton and Montgomery were two most trusted and powerful leaders belonging to the United States Military. But they disliked each other and rivalry was fierce. Both of them wanted to defeat German troops and each other to prove their worth to
Commanding General Eisenhower. The goal of the operation market garden was to end the war with the help of allied forces against German and return home by Christmas. The operation was a bold plan but the execution was a total disaster. The plan was to drop paratroopers in the German-occupied Netherlands, annex bridges and make a way for the assault. Supplies were still coming from Normandy and it was far away from most of the troops. It was important to seize bridges to gain access over German troops. German troops were able to prolong battle by blowing up one bridge at Son and at Arnhem. US-allied troops were not able to advance according to plan due to resistance from the German troops. Only 7 days were given to the US
MOVIE ANALYSIS OF MOVIE A BRIDGE TOO FAR and Allied troops to prepare for the mission. There were too many troops but not much time for the proper planning and execution of the operation. Communication devices were not working properly, there was little to no communication between the troops after the airdrop of paratroopers. Intelligence provided by Dutch Resistance regarding the presence of German troops around the bridge area was ignored by General Frederick Browning. The operation was supposed to last for 9 days and resulted in more than 17,000 casualties including killed, wounded and missing. Paratroopers landed in the area occupied by the SS panzer divisions. Food, medication and various other supplies were dropped in the wrong area by Air force. The ground force did not receive the support as well as ammunition to win the war. There was no communication between the ground force and air force to correct their mistake. Allied forces were expecting light resistance from German troops. But German had hidden their tanks and artillery in the wood line. Troops were given a hard time for their arrival but it was not met by the troops. Strength There were large numbers of troops involved in the operation market garden.Airborne troops were from 82ndairborne division and 101st airborne division. Ground forces include British XXX Corps, Dutch resistance and troops from Poland. Airforce was responsible for dropping the paratroopers as well as for dropping supplies to US troops. Weaknesses Communication devices were not working properly. There was a lack of communication between ground force and air force regarding the drop zone for essentials like food, medication, and ammunition. Intelligence about the presence of German troops was not passed down to all the troops. General Browning ignored the intelligence collected by Dutch intelligence.
MOVIE ANALYSIS OF MOVIE A BRIDGE TOO FAR Movement of troops did not have a hard time schedule. Troops were arriving 36 hours behind there scheduled arrival time. 7 days isless time to plan for such a bold operation involving a substantial number of troops from allied forces. The risk was overlooked by General Browning. Ground troops were not able to advance and seize bridge as they were lacking support from airborne and infantry elements. Opportunities German troops were able to take advantage of the landscape of Holland.British could not drive their tanks on the roads of Holland as they were narrow and there were many canals. Germans destroyed two bridges at Son and Arnhem which slowed down allied forces. German forces were able to maintain key bridges which prolonged the war. Threat Operation market garden was initiated by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery which had many flawed since the beginning of the operation. The plan was risky but there was no risk assessment of the plan. No measures were taken to mitigate the risk associated with a bold plan. The operation needed intricate planning between American paratroopers and British ground forces. There was no coordination between the airborne force and the ground force. General Browning disregarded the concerns raised by subordinate officers as well as Polish General Stanislaw Sosabowski about the operation. Combat vehicles did not arrive with their gliders and some were shot up in an ambush set up by German force. Radio sets were not compatible with long-distance. Most of the troops lost their lives during this operation. The title of the movie justifies the operation. Allied troops were going a bridge too far. The mission would have been successful if allied troops had taken time to plan the attack, consider the intelligence brought by officers during a recon of the area. General Browning should
MOVIE ANALYSIS OF MOVIE A BRIDGE TOO FAR have considered the suggestions made by other leaders. General Browning’s pride took a toll on the mission. The objective of the mission was to seize the bridges at various locations of the Netherlands in order to defeat German forces but the plan was a total disaster. Operation market garden did not go as planned by General Browning. “The key to the operation was the bridges, as if the Germans held or blew them, the paratroopers could not be relieved. Faulty intelligence, Allied high command hubris, and stubborn German resistance would ensure that Arnhem was a bridge too far”[CITATION Fli17 \l 1033 ].
