The Grand Hotel is an unexpected gem in Big Timber, MT. The building is from 1890 and has been completely restored in its original style. Its woodwork, hardware and bathroom furnishings are all of a high quality and excellent craftsmanship. Its “down the hall” bathroom...feature is actually a plus because there are several of them, there is never a wait and you avoid the overcrowding that can occur when it is in the guestroom. The housekeeping staff do a great job and we found our room clean and well prepared. The room prices are very reasonable, especially when compared to other area hotels. It has a very good restaurant and bar with good food and good servers. It appears to be a gathering spot for the locals. An awkward feature is the staff hours. Anyone arriving on a Sunday or Monday will find the staff completely absent and the bar and restaurant completely closed. This fact is not well communicated on the website and has led to some negativity in the reviews. The code system for entering works well and there is a phone and text number available if needed, but for anyone needing help or with questions it’s not like having someone on site. Even during open hours the likelihood of someone being at the front desk is not guaranteed. Overall, however, the Grand is charming and unique; it’s my goto place to stay whenever I’m in the area and I rate it a “4” overall and a “5+” in value.More

We were spending the night in Big Timber at another hotel but decided to try to get dinner at the Grand as we liked the menu. They kindly seated us without reservations And we were waited on professionally and in a timely manner. The bread...sticks were so tasty and unusual. We enjoyed elk sausage appetizers and different pasta entrees. All were delicious but the pastas was a bit more al ‘dente than we would have liked. Our server was lovely and helpful.More

With so few choices in town, we were hoping that this would be good. It exceeded all expectations! Excellent homemade fettuccine with Alfredo sauce and chicken. My husband had the grilled trout and my daughter had the buffalo burger. All of which were excellent! Service...was above and beyond what we expected.More

One of the most bizarre experiences we’ve ever had in a restaurant. When everything else in town was closed we really wanted something we didn’t have to cook. Walked in and after waiting for several minutes to be seated as the sign said, no one...paid any attention to us. Others came in behind and we all waited. The rude bartender finally said to sit anywhere. Since there were no tables clean, I asked a waitress where to sit. She directed me to a table that hadn’t been cleaned but we were okay waiting for it to be bussed. We waited until a waitress finally stopped by and said the kitchen was on hold and they weren’t taking orders but if we did want to order, they didn’t know when it would be out. In all our travels that was a first. Then she added she would be right back to take our order. We didn’t have anything else to do, so we decided to wait a bit and see how it played out. A family with three young kids came in at the same time we did and were seated. A number of people came in while we waited and we heard an employee tell them they were not serving or there was a wait or the kitchen was closed. The couple in the table near us said they hadn’t ever seen anything like it. They had been waiting longer than us and were ready to leave. The place wasn’t even half full and there were at least three servers. Our server walked by at least half a dozen times and would say she’d be right with us and we did manage to get glasses of water. The family with kids, the other couple and us walked out after waiting at least fifteen minutes for nothing. Somebody needs to get their act together.More

Our family made a special stop to have New Year's Eve dinner at The Grand and were sorely disappointed. We were seated in a basic room that felt like a military mess hall, zero appeal or effort to make it look nice. The service was...terrible. We had to ask to have our water refilled every time and the meal took 2 hours! The food itself was marginal at best and very expensive. Don't waste your time or the trip to this place, which is sad because The Grand used to live up to it's name.More

We stopped here for dinner as we were staying nearby. We had to wait to be seated, then were told that staff were about to start a meeting and they would help us after. No water, no beverage. I headed to the bathroom and overheard...the "meeting," which was staff discussing cookies or something she'd baked the night before, and the manager was talking casually. No rush, no work talk. When I returned to the table, the bartender had brought menus, but still hadn't taken our drink order (we do not drink alcohol, so that was not the issue). We saw a waitperson finally go to the next booth and take their order. Still, no one came to our booth. So, after waiting 15-20 minutes, we realized that this restaurant and staff thinks too highly of itself to bother with Customer Service. We left, and, as we were leaving, the bartender couldn't bother herself to ask us anything. We went to another restaurant in town that cares about its customers.More

Both my husband and I had the Brussel sprout appetizer, Caesar salad, trout, and strawberries Romanoff. All parts of the meal were well prepared and delicious. I’d highly recommend this restaurant. Plus, it’s in a great 1890’s hotel.

Big Timber isn't a large town, few opportunities to eat. Nonetheless, by chance we found the Grand Hotel and the restaurant bar was open. Great menu and really nice people. Chatted with folks at the bar while we waited for food. Really is a must...stop. There isn't much between Livingston and Laurel. This is better than you will find in any of the small towns between, by far.More

My husband and I needed a place to stay near Yellowstone prior to meeting my family in Gardiner for a vacation in Yellowstone. We stayed the night in Big Timber at the Grand Hotel. This quaint little town is very simple. We had dinner at...the hotel and the waiter there was incredible and helped us out with finding a place for a day hike and where to go grocery shopping in Livingston. The bed was very comfortable, but a little sqeaky. Bathrooms were available down the hall. Evening shower was nice and the rooms were clean though in need of a fresh coat of paint. Morning shower, there were no clean towels and no employees to be found to get one. The showers hadn't been cleaned since the night before and some guests had left their dirty towels in the showers. All in all, nice place to get some sleep, but you get what you pay for.More

With all the hotel chains around, this hotel is a true gem! Beautifully renovated and decorated old hotel with a great kitchen and full bar. Rooms are mostly with a shared bathroom, but that is doable and they are clean! Small beds.. Very much worth...to stop for!More

I had the portobello mushroom starter, and the mushroom was lost in the cheese and was drowned in a balsamic glaze. The dish just didn't seem well thought out. The strawberry and spinach salad was pretty good, but a little on the sweet side. I...had the river trout and with the baked potato. The potato was a little dry and under cooked, but the fish saved the day. It was delicious, well seasoned, and fresh. I just wish the rest of the meal was made as well as the fish. The atmosphere was also just confusing. This seemed like a building and establishment with a lot of heritage, and given the price point I thought that maybe i would have to dress up, but it seemed like there was no clear way to dress or act in the restaurant. That's fine, but maybe the intense and old decor could be toned down a bit if that is the case. It was also quite dark in the restaurant.More

I visited the restaurant for lunch, I ordered a Onion Soup which was absolutely delicious, the way they make it is a little bit different than the french soup, the seasoning was superb. I had also had a Fish sandwich, I have to say was...one the best I had, I perceive they make the breaded fish there so is homemade, right seasoning, and mostly fish. If you like french fries, you will love the sweet potato fries, my kid and I couldn't stop eating them, were so tasty. In general, great food, nice place and service, you shouldn't miss if you are around Big Timber.More

Another wonderful dining experience at the Grand! We had dinner here a few years ago, which was great, but this review is for the Thanksgiving buffet. All the staff were friendly and helpful. It was great to see that the wait staff were all ages...from pre-teen to adult. The food was wonderfully prepared and plentiful. If I would have eaten another bite I might have exploded. I hope we can do this again next year!More

Just came home from the worst meal I've ever had at the Grand. Not only was the halibut special overcooked to the point of cardboard, the quinoa was dry and dull as gravel and the broccolini limp as month-old lettuce. I sent the dinner back...immediately, asked for the salmon as a replacement, five minutes later asked that it not be overcooked, but the rest of my party of 9 were done with their meals before I received my plate. I went to the kitchen to tell them to cancel my order completely, sat back down and a waitress immediately showed up with the food saying it had just come out. I declined the meal, and then another waitress came back with the same food and asked if I wanted it boxed up. I was so tired of the inefficiency (including not getting water refills, not having my wine order taken, not being told what the accompaniments were...), I just said fine, wanting them to go away. At a fine restaurant, I would expect apologies for the service, the meal and the delay, and some consideration on the bill. No, indeed, we were charged full price for a meal I did not want, that I had rejected twice. And, we waited inordinately to place a dessert order, and again for our tabs. The waitress took only a few of the bills with payment at a time, coming back two more times to run a total of five credit cards. This on an evening when the staff was NOT slammed; there were many empty tables the entire time we were there. The entire ordeal lasted almost three hours. It will be a cold day in hell before I waste my money at The Grand again.More
