Police confirm ‘active shooter’ at YouTube headquarters

A female suspect died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after a shooting at YouTube headquarters in San Bruno, California, police confirmed Tuesday.

San Bruno Police Chief Ed Barberini told reporters at a briefing this afternoon that four people have been transported to local hospitals for gunshot-related injuries. Another victim, who police currently believe to be the shooter, died inside the building of a self-inflicted wound. Police also have yet to determine a motive.

Earlier today, the San Bruno Police Department said in a tweet that there was “police activity” at 901 Cherry Ave., the specific address belonging to the media giant. Police advised people to “stay out of the area.”

City Manager Connie Jackson told the Associated Press that multiple 911 calls reported a shooting at the headquarters.

Stanford Hospital confirmed to the PBS NewsHour that it was “expecting up to five patients.” Hospital spokeswoman Lisa Kim said there was no additional information on their conditions.

A spokesman for Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, the only level-one trauma center in San Francisco, said at a news conference that the facility is treating three victims of the shooting. A 32-year-old woman is in serious condition, a 27-year-old woman is in fair condition, and a 36-year-old man is in critical condition, the spokesman said. Trauma surgeon Andre Campbell said all were wounded by gunshots.

It’s not clear where the fourth victim identified by police or any subsequent victims will be treated.

Among the witnesses who took to Twitter was YouTube product manager Vadim Lavrusik, who posted that there was an “active shooter” at the building.

“Heard shots and saw people running while at my desk. Now barricaded inside a room with coworkers,” he added.

Shortly after news of the shooting, aerials of the headquarters showed a heavy police presence at the YouTube campus. People posted videos to Snapchat that appeared to show people being evacuated from the building with their hands up. In these videos, sirens were also heard in the distance.
