Corrie star of 60s and 70s Stephen Hancock dies aged 89

Former Coronation Street star Stephen Hancock has died at the age of 89.

The British actor, who was best known for his long-running role as Ernest Bishop in the ITV soap, died on November 1.

He had played Ernest from 1969 but his character, who was married to Emily Bishop (Eileen Derbyshire), was killed off in 1978 after a pay row with producers.

It was one of the most shocking moments in the soap's history up until that point as Ernest was shot in a bungled robbery.

After Corrie Hancock also appeared on shows including Agatha Christie: Poirot and Victoria Wood: As Seen on TV.

He was a brother of Christopher Hancock who also played a character in rival soap Eastenders.

Hancock was married to the actress Jocelyne Page, who died in 2012, and they had two daughters, Gemma dn Phyllida.
