The term stems from the analog era of PAL and SECAM TV-broadcast and comprises a whole set of technical definitions.

It is one of the two most important SDTV-modes

In the digital domain there are only three fixed properties, which define a 567i-signal:

This is often abbreviated as 576i25 or 576i50 (depending on whose definition you follow) to be more precise about the SDTV-mode.
Both terms are interchangeable and mean the same.

The horizontal display resolution of a 576i picture is not fixed.
Though there are 720 horizontal digital pixel data per line, of which 704 contain picture data, these 704 data pixels are spread to more or less horizontal display pixels depending on the aspect-ratio of the source material (3 or 9) and the aspect-ratio resulting from the conversion of the analog non-square pixels to the square digital display pixels.
This results in a multitude of possible horizontal display resolutions stemming from the same 704 digital pixel data per line.
