STAMFORD — Democrat Jim Himes has won an eighth term as the representative of Connecticut’s 4th District in Congress, prevailing over Republican Jayme Stevenson.

Himes, 56, has represented the district, which stretches across southwest Connecticut, since defeating Republican Chris Shays in 2008. He won about 59 percent of the vote Tuesday, according to unofficial results posted to the Secretary of the State's website.

“I’m honored and grateful to the people of Connecticut’s 4th Congressional District for asking me to represent them for another two years, and I’m excited to continue working every day to bring results back home,” Himes said in a statement Wednesday morning.

Stevenson, 61, ran against Himes after serving as Darien’s first selectman for a decade. She overcame challenger Michael Goldstein — a doctor, lawyer and Greenwich resident — in August’s Republican primary. Stevenson was also endorsed by the Independent Party.

"The voters have spoken here in the 4th CD and I congratulate Jim Himes on a successful reelection," Stevenson said in a statement. "We may not have won this race but our winning comes from the incredible people we’ve met and the thoughts, ideas and stories we’ve shared."

She urged candidates elected and reelected Tuesday to "bridge the political divide to help heal our nation."

The 4th District covers Bridgeport, Darien, Easton, Fairfield, Greenwich, Monroe, New Canaan, Norwalk, Oxford, Redding and Ridgefield and parts of Shelton, Stamford, Trumbull, Weston, Westport and Wilton.

Himes lives in Greenwich, where he chaired the Greenwich Housing Authority’s board, led the Democratic Town Committee and sat on the Board of Estimate and Taxation before joining Congress. He once worked under the nonprofit Enterprise Community Partners and at Goldman Sachs before that.

In the U.S. House, Himes is a member of the Financial Services Committee and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and is the chair of the Select Committee on Economic Disparity and Fairness in Growth.
