I thought that was pretty obvious when he starts jonesing for a fix in the middle of a meeting and tells a staff member to find a vein. Yeah, he’s an addict. I assume morphine or some other medically excusable drug.

I thought he was having a serious gall bladder attack on the plane?

That’s what I thought. It wasn’t until he was watching the news reel at the end of the episode 10 that I was like “oh… wait.”

It is opioids prescribed for medical reasons (like Percocet for a broken ankle) that is the #1 gateway drug to heroin in the US these days. The problem of addiction from medicinal use has only come to be recognized in these past few years.

Not true. Most people who start off using drugs like Percocet or Oxycontin and then "graduate" to heroin, aren't using drugs prescribed to them but, rather, are using illegally purchased/obtained tablets. The percentage of people who become addicted to heroin via opioids legititmately prescribed to them is miniscule.

Eden was addicted to morphine and Benzedrine, which was a commercial brand of amphetamines. By the time he became Prime Minister he had quit morphine but was still heavily addicted to Benzedrine. The side effects of the drug included insomnia, restlessness, and mood swings, all which Eden exhibited during the Suez Canal Crisis.

Reading his health history on his wikipedia page, I'm surprised he managed to quit morphine. In fact it reads as if it was almost a necessity and the Benzedrine merely ramped up to counter it. If anything, I would have expected medicine at the time to either add in a barbiturate or use it to try and replace what he had been using morphine for.

It was even worse: he used a fuckton of morphine, amphetamines to keep him from passing out like the junkie he was, and used benzedrine to stop himself acting like a permanently wired neurotic from the speed he was taking.

I’m not positive but I don’t think it’s an illegal drug. He has health problems throughout the series so I always assumed it was something that was prescribed to him.

They used to prescribe heroin too

Outside the US sometimes they still do.

Heroin is still prescribed, but only administered by doctors. It's called Diamorphine.

That’s what it looked like-heroin. … but was he taking it for pain?
