Loews Portofino Bay Hotel offers a slice of Italian charm with its elegant atmosphere and live entertainment, often highlighted by visitors. While the spacious rooms and hotel amenities, including multiple pools and convenient transportation to theme parks, are well-received, some guests feel the rooms and certain amenities could benefit from refurbishment. Despite its prime location, noise disturbances have been a concern. Service at the hotel is commended for its professionalism and the added value of express passes, yet the value proposition of the hotel's pricing is occasionally questioned by travelers.

This was our first stay at Portofino and we will certainly be back! We have previously been staying at Universal’s Hard Rock Hotel. I will list our pros & cons because I love to read others pros & cons on TripAdvisor.

Every person we encountered was a delight and beyond helpful. A special thank you to Jessica at the front desk, Storm at the valet, Gabby and Jamie at the beach pool who made our stay extra special.

Pros:

Fast passes: You are given complimentary fast passes for everyone in your room from the time you check in to the day you check out. They are essential to our vacations to the parks! Rarely do we wait longer than 20 minutes in the fast pass lines.

Beach Pool: We loved it!! The pool chairs are very comfortable with thick padding. There is a fun pool slide. Multiple life guards. Attentive servers. We found the food prices at the beach pool very reasonable. Yes, sodas and bottled water are expensive (around $5) but that’s the norm with any of the hotels & in the parks. The hotel offers complimentary water at the pool. The large cheese pizza ($14) and a side of fries ($5) easily fed both of my kids. The vegetable flatbread ($18) is SO good and large enough for two people. There is a large kids menu for only $12 the child get an entree, side item & a large drink. My son enjoyed their mocktails ($9) and we enjoyed their variety of cocktails ($16).

Another fabulous thing about the pool is that is stays open until 11pm. Everyone loved getting to enjoy the pool and hot tub after a long day in the parks. One night we skipped dinner at City Park and enjoyed dinner by the pool. The kitchen stays open until 10pm. They also show family movies each night at the pool. We saw How to Train Your Dragon.

Breakfast: We ate at the breakfast buffet at Trattoria del Porto. I would recommend this as brunch because there is so much delicious food you can skip lunch! Breakfast is served until 11 during the week & until noon on the weekends. The cost was $30 for ages 10 & up, $16 for ages 9 & under. The price includes your drinks. They offered a large variety of fresh fruits, muffins, cereals, juices, made to order omelets, biscuits, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, vegetables, potatoes.

I know that the $30 price may sound high to some but once you go to the parks & pay $18 for your mediocre chicken sandwich and $6 for a bottled water, that $30 buffet sounds wonderful.

Room: We booked a garden room. Our room was very spacious for our family of 4. It also had a little terrace with a table & 2 chairs. The perfect spot to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning. The beds were very comfortable. Mini fridge in the room but no microwave.

Valet: The valets were quick to open the doors to our Uber and welcome us to Portofino. Our flight arrived early that morning so they held our luggage for us so that we could enjoy the parks until our room was ready. They also held our luggage after checkout so that we could enjoy another day in the parks. Every valet was so kind and friendly!

There is an 18% gratuity added to all food & drink charges. I always bring a stack of 1’s & $5’s with me for extra tipping.

If you want to save money on sodas and bottled water take the 10 minute walk to Walgreens. There is also a liquor store next to Walgreens. The hotel printed directions to Walgreens for me.

Room service was very fast. We were told to expect an hour wait & they were there in less than 30 minutes. Food was wonderful. As with most hotels room service charges a $3 service fee & a 22% gratuity charge.

The texting system! How I love it!! I would text inquiring about dinner reservations in City Walk and the concierge would quickly get everything booked for us. I advise to inquire that morning for dinner reservations because the restaurants at City Walk do book up. I would send a text for anything we needed like extra cups, towels, truvia and they would quickly have it delivered to our room. Such an easy and convenient service!

Although some hotels are still not offering housekeeping. Our room was cleaned everyday without us having to ask. They did an excellent job!

Cons: not much to say…so it will sound a bit petty 🤷🏼‍♀️ 😂

The hotel is very large. When we first got there I found it a bit confusing and a longer walk to the pool than I was expecting. The Hard Rock is much smaller. After a day I found my bearings.

The hotel is a 15 minute walk to the theme parks. Hard Rock is a 10 minute walk.

Shuttle boats are wonderful but they shut down if there is any rain or thunder, lightening within several miles. This can be frustrating when you are stuck walking back. I understand it’s for safety reasons but in my opinion, having grown up on the lakes at home, shutting down over light rain is excessive. Just my opinion.

We absolutely LOVE Portofino and without a doubt it is their amazing staff that makes this property so special! We look forward to being back there very soon.

We stayed as a family of 5 people (2 adults, 2 kids aged 8&12, and one 70+ years old). We loved the quality of service when interacting with all staff (front desk, concierge, cleaners, restaurant personnel, valets, etc.). We chose the location mainly because we wanted to visit Universal for 2-3 days hassle free with Express passes, early entry and direct hotel to park transfer. The boat transfer was easy and frequent and the money we saved by not having to pay for express passes offset the high room rate. We liked the on site Starbucks for a quick morning coffee and breakfast sandwich. The room was spacious and beds were comfortable. The décor is a bit dated and tired looking but follows the Italian Portofino theme and there are plenty of spots on the property where you can find tables and chairs to sit and enjoy the surroundings. We spent a couple days at the main pool area which was nice. There was a hot tub, a waterslide and lifeguards. Our 12 year old found the pool a little boring , while the 8 year old was content. Food and drink service by the pool was very good and the loungers were comfortable (it does get a little crowded on hot days). It took a couple days to get used to the layout and where everything is located and the signage is not clear when trying to make your way through the various connecting buildings). We ate at Mama Della's for dinner one night and enjoyed the food and live entertainment. Don't count on early check-in if you visit during the busy season.

The last time I was at this hotel it was 19 years ago. This hotel is still my favorite on site.when we arrived at 930am our room was ready and we were upgraded to a suite with a full balcony. The luggage staff took us to the room a certain way so we would not get wet (since it was raining). The room was amazing spotless and even though they were renovating the first floor we didn't hear a peep. From front desk. Luggage staff and housekeeping everything was top notch.

Family vacation for the end of the year 2020 became a horrible experience.
This is to advice you before you go. During the 4 days there was not cleaning room services, all the trash was getting accumulate on the floor next to a full garbage can, called for a cleaning request and no one show up, even the kids complain about it, no to talk about the towels, no change on the towels, or anything in the room. Hiding after the Covid-19 situation the hotel is not given any services at all to the room. We choose this hotel for previous experience, but this time was a complete turnaround.
Another advice: The club level lounge, was horrible, bad services from the employees, asking for your room number all the time every day like we are from another planet or you were there stilling food? I felt discrimination at the Portofino Bay Hotel club level lounge. The food was cold and low quality, it is not worth it to pay extra money for the club level, when they had change from good to bad service and a bad experience.
Another advice: Be careful in reference to the self-parking charge. When you are leaving the hotel and check out your car from the parking garage do not pay with your credit card, use your room key to get authorization to leave the parking garage. No one explain this to me and I have been charged twice for the same number of days for the self-parking at the Portofino Bay hotel. I spoke with the front desk manager and as of today 9 days after checking out I have not received my refund back to my credit card. I just called today, and they said it will take several weeks to complete process and return back to my account. Here I'm an annual passholder, with many stays in this Portofino Hotel, with a bad experience and a point of no return to this 1 Star Portofino Bay Hotel.
For a better experience at Orlando Universal, I recommend the Hard Rock Hotel. They offer the same fast pass to the rides and a convenient boat ride to the Parks.

Travelling from the UK, this is our third long vacation at Portofino Bay. However, the stay, although good, was not as good as our previous two. Let me tell you why.

1. Room in Villa wing, as requested, but required three calls to maintenance, as the safe wouldn't close, drawer handle fell off and air con noisy on low settling.

2. Housekeeping - the standard was definitely lower than our previous experiences. Dust all over the top of the main drawer unit (the one that housed the fridge and TV) - minimal toiletries left in the room, damaged hair dryer)

3. Club level dining - this is our main issue. Having spend the best part of £1000 extra for club level, the food was never hot, no variation for breakfast and too many kids running around. I get it that the hotel books on a price per room basis, but are there really that many children crammed into the hotel rooms? However, it was good to see that there appeared to be a more stringent approach on entry into the club lounge, as the door was manned by staff, which was a change to previously, with the door being wedged open (making a mockery of having access passes) and hoards of people walking in and out (we did see a few people being challenged to produce passes, who clearly didn't have them)

5. Onsite Starbucks no longer giving 15% premier pass holder discount, and the coffee costs $1 more than in the parks.

4. If it wasn't for the express passes, we would stay at Sapphire Falls. We are returning in October 2020, but not staying in club level, and will report back on our experience

As we checked into our room and started to unload the bell luggage boat, I had my back towards the room and someone from that department just walked into my room with my door locked.we questioned and he just fled from room.
The room seemed fine except for the broken window in the room. We paid extra for this room with a cruddy looking view due to the broken window with stains in between the double pane
I woke up the next morning with red stains in my bedsheet, It was about the size of a quarter. As you can imagine, that was not a warm fuzzy feeling.
I went into shower to go to dinner, and I see mold stains around by the grouting.
I went downstair after dinner to speak to management about the room and housekeeping. The manager Kristen, was very attentive and took my complaints seriously. She tried to make me feel a little better and offer breakfast the next day(which I found out is the cure all for all the managers to offer if there is a bad experience suffered by hotel guests. After we spoke, she said that she would send housekeeping up to my room and changed the red stained sheets. Due to Co-Vid rules, me kids were too tired to leave the room so I said I would change the sheets, just send them up. They were sent up and as I undid the bed the bed, I started to remake the bed. First new sheet was ripped, second new sheet was ripped. Finally last 2 weren't and I made the bed. While trying to put the comforter away, I started to twist and fall out of its cover, I took cover out and noticed all major rips on the comforter

To add insult to injury, my wife the night before was in the lobby and tried to use public bathroom downhill from reception. While getting set inside, a housekeeping personnel came to the bathroom stall door and took their key and tried to open the bathroom stall door where my wife was in.. No knocks on door, no excuse me

If you are visiting universal/islands of adventure, this is the nicest hotel in that area. Very clean and nice people. Rooms/restrooms very spacious. Rooms with bay view have large windows overlooking the water. Self parking in a garage and costs $28/day. We did not receive our room until 2pm on a Saturday. Nice selection of bars and restaurants to sit in the piazza, watch people go by and to watch ducks in the water, really beautiful. Recommend taking the boat to the parks because walking is a little too far. If you are looking for a hotel within walking distance to the parks go with the hard rock or Polynesian. The boat ride to city walk comes every 10 minutes. There is a Starbucks on location. Breakfast options at hotel include room service, Starbucks, and a few sandwiches/cereal at the gelateria. There is a live opera performance every night at 7:30pm at the piazza. There is also live music at the thirsty fish on fridays and saturdays from 8pm-11pm. There are 3 pools at this hotel, but 2 are very small and basic. The main pool is nice and where all the guests are. When staying at this hotel you receive an express pass at universal and city walk, and you get early park admission at 8am. Just a heads up, the express pass is not accepted at hagrids motorcycle ride, we were pretty upset about that. Rated this hotel as a 4 star because it is pricey for the quality of room, shower had a curtain, and pool is very basic in comparison to other hotels in the Orlando area.

We reserved a Deluxe Room at Portofino Bay specifically based on the online pictures and website description of a separate bathtub and shower, and views overlooking the resort pools. The front desk staff was friendly and handed us room keys and off we went to find our room, which is not easy at this hotel. We walk in and it is a handicapped room. I love the fact that hotels have handicapped access rooms available, but if they don't match the room description, travelers should be given the choice. It only had a roll-in shower, no bath tub. The shower water created a stream to a drain 6 feet away in the center of the bathroom. Opened the curtains and the room was so low all we could see was landscaping, no pool view at all. We stopped by the front desk, told them we were disappointed the room didn't match the description and wanted to move. Of course there were no other rooms available, but they offered to move us the next day. We get to the next room, much better view, but the room is smaller and has a combined shower/tub. After doing some research we realize that we were moved to a Standard room and not a Deluxe. We figured there must be a rate reduction because we paid more when making the reservation for the Deluxe Room. We explained the situation to the front desk staff member who totally understood the problem and then called the manager. The manager said since the current price of the Standard Room was higher than our original reservation for the Deluxe Room, we weren't due any reduction. I said that I know there was a difference when I booked, but the manager said there was no way to go back into their system and see what the difference was. They offered a 2 hour late check out. Dumbfounded, I quickly looked at future dates on my phone and saw an average of about $40 per night less for the Standard room. The front desk member called the manager again (he never came out to talk to us personally) and said weren't happy and mentioned the $40 rate difference that I found. They finally just added a $120 credit to our bill to make me go away, never apologizing or admitting putting us in a lesser room for the same rate was wrong. Other than that, the hotel layout is very odd. Elevator up from the parking garage, walk outside to the lobby, go down different elevators to the courtyard, walk outside to the entrance closest to your room, and back up another elevator to your room. I'm sure we missed some hotel amenities because were never sure where to go or how to get there. On the first night we forgot the Do Not Disturb sign and housekeeping entered at 8:05 with one knock a 2 second pause, we were still in bed. On the good side, the bed was very comfortable.

We booked a 2 Queen Club Level room. We had a nice view of the harbor piazza. The room was spacious and had everything we needed to easily share the bathroom amongst two adults and two teens. The toilet is behind a door, so the two sinks could be used while someone was on the toilet. This is very useful when trying to get out the door to the parks.

The Club lounge was under construction, so a few of the conference rooms were in service as a substitute. Everything was very nice and filling for breakfast. There were options to suit everyone in our party. We were only at the hotel one day during lunch time, the club food then is definitely snacks rather than a meal. The staff are all amazing!

Having express passes included in the hotel cost is a very good way to experience the parks without spending as much time standing in line. You can also have any purchases delivered to your hotel as long as you are not checking out the next day. This is particularly great for any HoneyDuke's sweets you want to purchase but not haul around.

I never write reviews but couldn’t help myself with this place. There is no attention to detail. So many issues which wouldn’t have bothered me had this been a cheap motel: 1) 45 minute line just to check in, only to get a room key and be told to go somewhere else to get park passes, which was closed and had one kiosk that was not user friendly...oh, and when you check in they ask for everyone’s names, email, and phone number, all of which they should already have when you book...in todays world, please streamline this process like most other hotels of this class do, and don’t make people wait 45 minutes just to check in (and there weren’t that many people in line...I can’t imagine had the line been longer) 2) Room had three towels in it for the four of us. Really? 3) Safe in room didn’t work. No power. Called and told battery must have gone out. 4) Towels received on second day had an awful smell to them. We could hardly stand it and made whole bathroom stink. I’ve stayed in a lot of hotels in my life and never had this happen, 5) Clock/alarm clock in room had no power..had to unplug it and plug it into a different socket that actually had power. 6) no clear signage to get places. To get to pool would be easy if they would just put the word ‘pool’ next to the number 2 in the elevator. Or put a sign somewhere inside the building people are staying in. 7) got sons order wrong at breakfast, 8) walls are paper thin to the hallway. 9) when a/c is on, it blows directly onto the head of the person sleeping in one of the beds.. I could go on. One thing after another. Overall, just so unimpressed by what should be a hotel with more attention to detail. And if we pay thousands of dollars to stay here, how about a couple free bottles of water instead of charging 7.50 a piece for the ones in the room. Come on.

There’s a Walgreens nearby, check Google maps. You can exit PB by the employee parking lot which is near the big pool with the water slide. It’s a hot walk but doable. Walgreeens does not have fresh food (no veggies etc) but they have a liquor store attached and snacks.
