If there is only one Manilow CD that is a must to own, it is this one. This is a Manilow unlike the one known to pop audiences. Gone is Mandy, Copa Cabana & I Write The Songs. Instead, the listener is transported to a smokey bar after last call. The crowd is thinning and the piano man begins to sing from the depths of his broken heart. He is accompanied in duet by Sarah Vaughan on one track and Mel Torme on another and is joined by some of the jazz greats who back him up on this journey through the heartache of lost love.

Thirty odd years ago, I heard the duet with Mel Torme being played as I shopped in my local grocery store. I raced to the nearest record store to find the album. I found one copy buried among all the other Manilow vinyl. I purchased it on the spot. Years later, after wearing the grooves to a frazzle, I replaced it on CD. I can't put in words how much I love this CD. Recently, I signed on to Spotify, one of the many free music sources. Just today, I was adding to my cache of music and decided to check out what was available by Manilow, when, to my surprise, I came across this "remastered" version of 2am Paradise Cafe. As I started listening to it, my ears pricked up. I was hearing instrumentals I never caught before. The singing sounded more poignant, if that could be possible. I found myself swept away in an experience that far surpassed the original. I don't know what was done in the remastering but the tempo is slower, the instrumentals are more sultry and the vocals are more haunting. Tonight, I sat in a dark corner booth of a smokey bar and rediscovered this CD. This is a new and improved 2am Paradise Cafe. A must have for any broken hearted lover in need of a good cry. I bought this version IMMEDIATELY and you should too. Don't hesitate!!!! You will not be disappointed!!

I can't believe my ears. I am mesmorized by this CD. I got routed here by Amazon's marketing prowess. I don't own anything by Manilow but have an open mind when it comes to music. Reading the other reviews and listening to the samples, I figured what the heck, I've spent $10 bucks on a lark before, so why not..

Well you have some of the greats in jazz playing, singing, writing, writing, singing and playing. The entire CD was peformed live in one take, with no break between songs and it is nearly flawless. Gerry Mulligan adds his golden breath to "Where have you gone" as well as just about every tune, the great Johnny Mercer co-writes "When October goes" with Barry Manilow. The arrangements are right on target. This is one of the few CD's that really was a special moment in time the day it was recorded.

Barry says in the liner notes that if he is remembered for one piece of work, this one would be it. I can understand why he chose "Paradise Cafe" to name the CD. This would be any jazz lover's paradise cafe. I know in the afterlife, some of these songs will play in my soul. Thank you Barry Manilow.

If you like jazz or just like quality music, this is a hidden gem.

Barry continues to display his versatility as the superbly talented artist he is with this very different Manilow album, a fine collection of jazz. Eleven mighty-fine arrangements, all music by Barry. All are hauntingly soft and beautiful melodies that you might hear in a cocktail lounge during the wee small hours of the morning. We are all familiar with the peaceful "When October Goes," the only song included which is not jazz, in my opinion, but it fits nicely into this album.

Guest stars on the album include the Greats: Sara Vaughan and Mel Torme. "Blue" is the duet between Barry & Ms. Vaughan. "Big City Blues" is Barry's duet with Mr. Torme. Both songs are well crafted and are also soft cocktail jazz.

A booklet is included with the words to all the songs, so you can sing along with Barry and his friends. As you read through the booklet and the cover note, you will see how very proud Barry is of this very special album, the concept and title of which first came to him in a dream. And what a fantastic collection of music it is!

A fine album for a quiet night and a glass of wine, with that special someone. Mmmmm.

I've felt for years that if listeners want a Best of Barry Manilow Collection, then this is it. Forget the pop stuff and listen to this jazz classic. "Blue" with Sarah Vaughn is alone worth the price of admission. However, the value doesn't end there. Due to the way most songs segue into the next, foreshadowing melodies yet to come, this recording rewards multiple listens, thus elevating the experience from merely a set of good songs to a journey which takes you to a smoky bar in a big city with an atmosphere redolent of lost love - a journey which ends too soon despite the 50-minute playing time.

The songs and arrangements are timeless. Some of the world's best jazz players and singers participated - Johnny Mercer posthumously providing the lyrics to "When October Goes." It is a very well-done concept album, beautifully recorded and so near flawless, it's difficult to criticize. Just buy it.

Not your usual Manilow. Like sitting in a smoky bar late at night. I had this years ago on cassette but wore it out. Glad I found this.

There are few recordings that, as a unified collection, could be considered as great as this one. I'm awestruck that it was recorded in one take. The original songs, the mood he sets, the guest artists he invited to join him (including Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme)...absolutely exquisite. The title track sets a perfect tone for the remaining tunes. These are not the trademark "hammerhead-ending" tunes for which Manilow is best known. They are classic, polished gems -- every single one. Barry Manilow has said that he hopes this is the recording for which he is best remembered. I hope so, too.

I absolutely LOVE this cd!! I hadn’t heard it before and actually ordered 2 that were highly recommended but this one is the one I play over and over. It’s so smooth and lush and beautiful. If you’re a Manilow fan or just a jazz fan you should have this cd. I love the fact that he recorded it all in one take without stopping so each song flows into the other. It’s awesome. I’m going to order more copies for my mom and friend.

I already had this on vinyl but purchased CD at a very reasonable price. Agree heartily with the other positive reviews. I think if you played it to someone who dislikes Barry Manilow from his popular image they would never guess it was him. Classic music, arrangements and lyrics. Very classy piece of work and a pleasure to listen to.
