Based on the average temperature along the coast, what month (springtime) is it warm enough to drive along Highway 1 in a convertible?
It's always warm enough to drive along Hwy 1 in a convertible - just put on a jacket and turn on the heater ;-)
The climate on the coast on the Monterey Bay and through Big Sur is very moderate, so it is rarely too cold or too hot. Average highs in the springtime are mid-to-high 60s. Later in the spring is likely to be a little warmer and will have less chance of rain, so if sunny and warm(ish) weather is your goal, I'd choose late May.
In spring? You’ll likely be using the heat. But that’s better than if it’s hot and getting pulverized by the sun.
Late May is when the fog starts up. Spring along the coast can be windy and downright cold. I've seen warmer days in Jan/Feb, but there's just no way to predict what days will be warm until days before a visit most of the year. Sept/Oct is traditionally sunnier and warmer, but that wasn't the case last year. Our cool, overcast summer weather lingered into those months last year, so just book a trip when it's convenient for you and just take whatever weather presents itself.
You might get heated should someone vandalize a car that advertises "naive tourist." Should you go ahead with this, reduce your vulnerability by hiding everything when you are stopping off.
Absolutely!!
Your own or are you renting one?? People say that every other car is a mustang convertible, which of course is not true, but probably 1 in 20 cars is.
I did Memorial Day weekend. It was marvelous … the car did have seat heaters and a power wind blocker. I suggest a scarf, and or windbreaker/light jacket (with hood) which helps keep the draft off your neck … if you don’t have a wind blocker (and I don’t think they’re included with mustangs if you’re renting one of those).
The weather so changeable that in a few miles you can go from being chilly with heat and seat heaters running to warm with the air conditioning on.
As mentioned, if you’re doing a one-way trip and are going to have luggage, make sure everything is hidden in the trunk
Edited: 1 year agoSo my Mazda MX-5 RF advertises me as a "naive tourist?" Good to know. I always thought I lived here. Never had a smashed trunk or vandalized inside in over 40 years of ragtops, either (although the most recent ones have been "ragtops" only in an affectionate sense).
Mustangs (and similar) convertibles do mark one as a tourist.
"Mustangs (and similar) convertibles do mark one as a tourist."
I would like to amend that statement to BASE MODEL mustang convertibles (and similar) mark one as a tourist. Plenty of people buy these convertibles, but usually not the base model. Thieves can spot the difference instantly. But then, it's not hard to spot a rental car of any variety. And car break-ins are a risk for any type of car, so to be safe, no one should leave things in the passenger compartment. Make sure everything is out of sight and chances are high that you will be totally fine. Potential thieves will bypass your empty car for the sure thing parked two spaces down.
In my neck of the woods, the only Mustangs are rentals. (SF, San Mateo and Marin Co)
The few convertibles are foreign makes.
