probably becouse technically this was the second rockpile album released in 1979 with the entire rockpile line up this was probably my favorite nick lowe solo album of all time as i loved all his work on the brinsley shrwartz stuff back in the early 70s, the remastering on this disc is fantastic and this comes in a mini lp replica style sleeve with a bonus track, obviously this record to was probably nicks most successful release with the cruel to be kind hit on this one wich even got into the charts in the us and got a lot of airplay back then, i would call the release of this album nicks highest point in as he had released his first great solo album jusus cool in 1978 the year before and had also produced the first damned record for stiff records that blew the uk punk scene out of the uk and to the world in 1977 with his production of one of punks best ever records DAMNED DAMNED DAMNED (1977) so this was prime in 1979 and the the cruel to be kind single doing so well by late 79 and into early 1980 he was at the top of his game, as others have said i can only wish they would do a deluxe version of the classic rockpile record from 1980 as that seemed to hit the top for nick and dave edmonds and of coarse had world wide success, anyway i am very happy with tThis reissue its an ace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also look for the rockpile live cd/dvd set that was recorded and filmed in germany in 1980 it is called rockpile live at rockpalast........................

Ever the joker, Nick's phrases come supplied with a razor wit that just hits you in the face. Roots-rocking band, Rockpile is in the pocket every time - concise and to the point. The jangly pop of "Cruel to be Kind" is where Nick reaches his mainstream potential. Drummer Terry Williams answers gleefully with his fills.
Though it must be said, this record is far more than its hit single. It's Nick Lowe's variety show and it's swarming with hooks. Revel in a bit of Dave Edmunds' Delta blues guitar on "Cracking Up" or hear the band detour into rockabilly on the vulnerable "Without Love". The quirky "Big Kick, Plain Scrap" is great new wave. Nick's one solo moment, "You Make Me" is folky with a slight Phil Spector touch. There's the extended metaphor in "Switchboard Susan" and there's when he's put in a bad spot in the full down low immersion of "Dose of You".
Finally, come the pop sensibilities, complete with exhilarating harmonies, of "American Squirm", "Born Fighter" and "Skin Deep". They're amongst the most finely crafted pop songs available. All have melody but with punk attitude.
I've always felt that "Labour of Lust" was that link between Elvis Presley's "Sun Sessions" and 1979. It was pure pop for now people back then. Forty years later, it continues to ring true. And Yep Roc's CD-reissue is punchy without making the music sound sanitized. I'm sure glad, at long last, I realized I was in need of an upgrade.

This review is for the recent YepRoc vinyl re-issue of this LP. I bought it recently to have a clean record to play - never dreaming the sound on this already amazingly clear, bright, punchy, fab sounding bunch of Rockpile songs could have been improved upon. I was just hoping they didn't take anything out of the production. But take it from me, this is worth buying even if you have a good original press of this rock/pop gem of a record. Somehow there's more punch to the mix, and sheen to the master, without overdoing it. This whole release received a lot of deserved respect and TLC; great gatefold cover, proper LP credits, and a couple of bonus tracks to boot. Wish the entire Rockpile catalogue would get this treatment. Enjoy, and Thanks Yep Roc.

While this release is under the auspices of Nick Lowe it is really the sound of a great rock/pop band (Rockpile) at the height of its powers. While most listeners already know Cruel To Be Kind they have only heard a sample of the musical delights herein. Lowe with Dave Edmunds, Billy Bremner, and Terry Williams rock out on Switchboard Susan and Love So Fine, continue in the pop vein on Without Love and Skin Deep, do some genre-busting on Big Kick, Plain Scrap, and add a bit of country to Without Love. There's lots more to enjoy on Labour of Lust. The singing and playing are top-notch throughout and not one of the tracks comes off as "filler". An excellent album!
Why only four stars then? That would make it as good as Revolver or Blonde on Blonde or a few others and it's not quite there. It is, however, a fine collection of varied musical directions given a consistent sound by the performers and one that this reviewer has returned to over and over since its original release on vinyl in 1979.

I love Nick Lowe and was excited to find my favorite Lofgren release available in CD. My LP is decades old and played to within an inch of its life. Sound quality of this CD is outstanding. And being able to play “Cracking Up” is a delightfully cathartic experience...still!

Don't forget that this is really Rockpile's second album. But still 100% Nick. Amazing.

次はベスト盤を買おうか、オリジナル盤を集めていくべきか、迷っているところ(^^;

This Is New Wave

One of my favorite albums of all time, In 1979 I thought this album was such a cool sound, not punk, not retro Rock& Roll but something new, for me it was New Wave, this album was recorded the same time as Dave Edmunds
Repeat When Necessary
(you need both) there was a TV special called Born Fighters (check it out on youtube) recorded at the time (1978) and I was hoping that would make a bonus DVD for this release but alas no, the bonus tracks that make the cut are the dark and somber Basing Street (b-side of Crackin Up), and single release American Squirm (which replaced Endless Grey Ribbon on the original U.S. lp release) if you want a Deluxe style experience then purchase the Dave Edmunds album to go with it, the two go hand in hand, Just look at that Barney Bubbles cover this is New Wave.
