Army Special Forces as seen by Hollywood

Being a former S.F. soldier with 20+ years, I have a passing knowledge of how things go in real life.
The basic storyline is fine overall; however, the film misses, in so many ways of actual S.F.
operations prep. and execution. It may make for great Hollywood presentation, but closer
adherence to reality would have been better. It was supposed to be a film about what really
happened. So, show how it is really done. The intense, in-depth preparation that an S.F. team
does before even going down range.
Does the term "Brief Back" mean anything?
It should. But it's not even mentioned.
Specific oversights? Okay, in last battle scene: the hero(s)
never have to reload their weapons! No M-4 that I know of carries an four hundred magazine.
Next, everyone speaks good English . . NOT. That's why S.F. takes months (years?) learning
the local languages. It would have been better had they spoken Pashtun with English subtitles
(Ala: "Dances with Wolves").

I found this movie to be very interesting on many levels. Packs a lot of information in a short time frame and tries to give the viewer an accurate look at the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan right after 9/11. It is a war movie so viewers SHOULD not be surprised by the violence, gun battles, or language. It is a stunning look at what Special Forces did that dealt the Taliban major blow right under everyone's noses with no one being any the wiser. Sad that the world had to wait this long to find out about this operation, in light of the fact that Americas' Response Monument commemorating this military operation is up in the foot prints of the World Trade Center. The movie moves right along, gets to the point and makes it, and then the movie is over. I was so intrigued I checked the book (The Horse Soldiers) that this movie was based on out of the library and read it in an afternoon. I would highly recommend this movie, great acting, compelling story, true to life-- I give it 5 stars and 2 thumbs up.

It's just totally lame on so many levels... the dialogue is ridiculously sappy and lame, every character is developed into some sort of homegrown hero, reluctantly fightin' the good fight, there is zero military professionalism portrayed, the politics is basically propaganda to galvanize the audience towards the necessity of the war in Afghanistan, the battle scenes are just utterly contrived, and the entire story misses badly on the Green Berets' general purpose and mission, which is to train paramilitary forces and assist with planning, coordination and support...

Here's one example of dumb: in the first battle scene, Hemsworth calls in an airstrike... B-52 dropping guided bombs.
They are out of GPS coverage and he calls in the coordinates off of where an Afghan dude points to a map with his finger... that's fine, I suppose, but guided bombs typically ride a laser designator... and Hemsworth wasn't painting a target... but ok, he calls it in off the map... old-school, still works.
The coordinates are way off so, after the rounds impact in full view of Hemsworth as forward observer, he says that he is going to bring in another mission... but, instead of adjusting fire based off of where the first rounds hit or painting the target with a designator, he declares that he has to get closer to bring it in on target... so he charges down the hill and gets behind a rock and... calls in the fire mission off his stupid map again! I mean, what is the difference between reading the map on the hill versus reading the map 300 meters down the hill?
The move does draw small arms fire, though, so the action heats up, and it puts them danger close to the fire mission so the clock is ticking!
Just lame, lame, lame... turned it off an hour in.

First off, I have ZERO clue what the Green Berets endure during their careers... with that said, I really like how the movie talks about the divide amongst the Northern Alliance, at that time. I did a deployment (U.S. Marine Corps) in Afghan during Nov. 2004- July 2005 and the stories told from the locals are pretty in line with the story told in the movie. The Taliban had access to former Soviet Union weaponary. Some scenes in this film really did take me back to those years of freezing on post to sweating out my last drop of sweat on a patrol to interacting with the local children and passing out toys/gifts. Anyways, great film. shout out to those that are still reserve/active!

Realistic portrayal of "average" family men becoming heroes

There was a lot to love about this movie: seeing the men as husbands before they deployed. Finding out that two of them had abusive fathers -- is there a correlation between childhood abuse and adult heroism? Hearing that one had been a history teacher, of all things. The actors that the General pointed out as having 'killer's eyes' NAILED that look: I could see what the general saw. At the same time, Hemsworth was also perfect: you could see the residual softness in his expression. I loved the Captain's determination to enter the battle, his willingness to voice his opinions to his superior officer, his keen intellect, and his determination to bring his entire team back alive. I also loved how the Captain and the General changed each other. I appreciated the portrayal of the General as a man who had lost his family, who cared deeply for his soldiers, who forced the Captain to earn his respect. I like it that it took a long time for me as a viewer to trust the General. The uncertainty and complexity was all very realistic. I found the movie to be well-made and well-acted, and am looking forward to watching it again.

Overall the movie is targeted at an American public which is not necessarily a bad thing but there is too much everything: super soldier, best negotiator, most trustworthy, perfect father to child, absolute loyalty, ideal husband, ... it's too much to bear.
There are a few scenes where there is some cultural exchange and some cool - and intense - fighting scenes.
But it doesn't resonate - maybe Dostrum's words are the wisest.
