About the author
Solomon Northup (1808–1857) was a free-born African American from Saratoga Springs, New York. In 1841, he was kidnapped and forced into slavery for twelve years. With the help of his family and his father’s former master, Northup ultimately won his freedom and took the traders who betrayed him to court. He is best known for his autobiographical account of his enslavement, Twelve Years a Slave.

On reflection, the reality of slavery seems impossible to fathom. In our comfort zone far away from the past and living a life far removed the historical narrative of depraved humanity inflicting gruesome pain on other humans, our minds struggle to grasp its reality. Without documented and oral history, it is easy to become naive, ignorant and dismissive of the past.
It is not until we read first hand accounts from victims of slavery that the truth stares us in the face. It is then that we can appreciate profoundly, as if we were there, the fate of our ancestors.
Solomon Northup is a victim’s voice from the past. Because of his written testimony we can know the truth about slavery.
However, for Solomon Northup the truth about slavery was not that simple. Because even in the throes of his predicament he questioned the reality of what he was experiencing and witnessing. He asked of himself, how could it be possible? Was it "a protracted dream"?
As brutal and inhumane as slavery was, yet Northup did not lose his soul and his love for humanity. He was wise not to cast a net of hatred and condemnation on an entire people whose members were responsible for slavery. There are moments of relief from moroseness in his writing where he focuses his attention on the beauty of nature and the kind spirit residing in the slave owner and the slave; the white non slave owner and the free person of African descent.
This book is a window into the past. It contains detailed descriptions of his country and his people: lush vegetation, the habitats of wild animals, rivers and lakes teeming with fish. His descriptions penetrate imaginations, teasing us to wish for those pristine traits of nature that are no more. Further, his keen eyes and mind capture the character of people in his ambit. His commentaries on the various persons with whom he interacted reveal a highly perceptive mind. And to our great fortune he shares some profound reflections on the human condition apart from his experience of slavery.
There is nothing illusionary about a slave’s experience of slavery. Solomon Northup's book is more than a significant record of history. It is one that is prophetical and inspirational. He warns about the corrupting influence of evil institutions. He inspires us to be good to mother earth and to be good to one another.
This is a book well worth reading for the historical knowledge and the wisdom it imparts.
