    Ten-man Bayern fall to Gladbach

FC Bayern were beaten 3-2 away at Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday. There was an early shock for Julian Nagelsmann's side when Dayot Upamecano was sent off for a challenge as last man, and Lars Stindl soon put the home side ahead. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting levelled the scores before half-time. Jonas Hofmann and Marcus Thuram netted for the Foals in the second half. Mathys Tel's stoppage-time goal came too late.

The Bavarians lined up with Yann Sommer in goal and Benjamin Pavard, Upamecano and Daley Blind in defence. Joshua Kimmich anchored a midfield featuring Serge Gnabry, Ryan Gravenberch, Leon Goretzka and Alphonso Davies, with Thomas Müller and Choupo-Moting up front. João Cancelo replaced Müller following Upamecano's dismissal. Leroy Sané and Jamal Musiala came on for Gnabry and Gravenberch at half-time, Matthijs de Ligt and Tel taking over from Goretzka and Choupo-Moting in the second half.

    Early shock

Gravenberch saw an early shot blocked before Upamecano was given his marching orders after a challenge on Alassane Pléa as last man. Sommer parried the ensuing free-kick but was unable to prevent Stindl from scoring following a free-kick shortly after.

Bayern enjoyed more of the ball despite being a man down, and Gnabry saw an effort blocked. Gladbach soon won the ball in midfield, Kouadio Koné squaring for Stindl, who fired wide from 12 yards. Munich levelled the scores when Davies charged down the left and cut back to Choupo-Moting, who powered home. Sommer made a fine save to deny Koné and Goretzka hit an effort wide at the other end.

    Tel's goal too late

The match ebbed after the interval, with Kimmich firing just over the bar. The Foals restored their lead out of the blue when Bayern lost possession, Hofmann teeing up Pléa, whose cutback invited the former to beat Sommer. A Ramy Bensebaini shot crashed off the bar and Sané saw an effort saved at the other end.

Cancelo hit the side-netting and Davies fired over. A Sané shot was blocked but the hosts moved further clear when Hofmann's square found Thuram, who fired past Sommer. Stefan Lainer failed to clear the ball with the full-time whistle imminent, Davies' header finding Tel, who made the most of it, but the goal came too late with only a few seconds remaining.

The result means Bayern have 43 points from 21 matches, one clear of Union Berlin, who take on Schalke on Sunday. The champions will be back in action next Sunday when they entertain Union.
