This gorgeous building contains a comprehensive museum of the history of the Japanese navy. You take the elevator to the top floor and work your way down through the 7 floors of exhibits. There is video presentation regarding the present-day Self-Defense Force navy as you begin your visit. The exhibitions proceed in chronological order. Most of the exhibits have English text along with the Japanese text. The bottom floor also has a fairly extensive little gift shop. The staff were very kind and helpful. Finally, the views of Sasebo from the observation are quite beautiful. It is worth making a day-trip from Nagasaki to visit.

This museum was very good! The staff working at the time I went did not speak English, (I don't ever expect them to since it is Japan after all) but they do provide you with an English walk through handout that coordinates with numbers next to the exhibits. That way you can look up what everything is and get a brief description, which I found very helpful.
There was several floors of exhibits and towards the end there is an interactive simulation that you can try and steer a ship into Sasebo Bay lol. I couldn't initially figure it out but a gentleman that works there was very friendly and showed me what to do with out me having to ask for any help.
The gift shop had many good souvenirs from miniature models to keychains.

Great museum that doesn't get many Americans, but it should. Tucked in the corner across from Navy Main Base Housing, Bunka Hall, & the Fire Station, it would be an easy walk to visit. 7 floors; go directly to the top and see the great view from the observation area, then work your way down. A few parking places in front. It's free!

A great history of the Japanese navy and the conflicts Japan participated in. Nicely laid out with great models and interpretive panels. Museum is set up like the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart, spiral you way up or down the multistory facility viewing along the way.

Visited this place when we first got to Sasebo.... Walked over since it is a stone throw away from where we live.... Admission is FREE and no photography is allowed within the premises.... Very interesting Japanes Naval history and at the top level you can have the view of the entire Sasebo port.... which is pretty cool.... Not too sure if it's suitable for kids at all.. as they might get bored but off they are keen in looking at ship models - why not??? Enjoy folks.....

Very friendly staff and interesting exhibits. Interesting for anyone curious about Japanese Naval History. As a former submarine sailor, I was hoping for a bit more sub history but there is another museum for that. I wish more of the exhibits had the English translation. Nice little gift shop and observation deck. Walking distance from Commander, Fleet Activities Sasebo,

While I didn't visit the museum it was the only way to post some photos of Sasebo. It's a pretty place with parks and gardens.

It's also home for a large US base for the 7th Fleet.

We went there in December 9th 2015, it was empty. I would recommend this place for those that loves history. This place is near Sasebo Yonkacho- the Sasebo arcade. Entry is free. If you know Japanese, it might be more useful as the instructional videos played in the museum are made in Japanese.

We first visited this museum on a city bus tour offered at the Sasebo train station. It was interesting enough for a return trip where we could take more time looking at the exhibit. Almost everything is labeled in English, but the films are in Japanese. It is a reminder that every nation has its war heroes and pride in its military. I highly recommend the affordable city tour as a way to visit several spots in Sasebo, get a feel for locations, and then make your way back to points of interest.

This museum is a well documented history of the Japanese navy. It has some really great exhibits. I did wish that more of the exhibits had English explanations but was still able to enjoy the several floors that the museum contains.
