Address
Neighborhood: Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.

    Busy but atmospheric.
A very busy area with lots of shopping, eating and drinking places, Pachinko parlours. We found a bar up steep stair for couple of beers. Walk around soak up atmosphere. We found a reasonably priced bar restaurant, had good snacks and enjoyable saki, young staff pleasant and a little understanding of English . Went twice in same day. Went looking for it when we returned to Tokyo after 12 days unfortunately no luck, streets too busy to see up and down each one.

Nice to walk, dont spend so much $$ there
Usual bustle. Cool sunny weather makes it nice to walk around. Cater to tourists so beware. We ate at an eatery with seats and selling skewed/BBQ seafood. It has a ¥490 table charge pax on top of food/drinks. Sashima was precut & placed in a huge plastic tub. Th prawn & octopus are ok. The beef skewers was tasteless & cold. (posted the shopfront photo) Went to Sundrug store (near Ueno Stn/Park, see map). Avoid this store. The cashier secretly threw in a coin purse (¥390) and charged us for it, while packing the items into the duty.free bag. The sale discounts are not applicable to all items. Do count yr items & check against yr bill.

Great area to wander for a few hours - lots of typical Japanese goods to purchase
Easy access from Ueno station. Multiple streets run under the train lines & have loads of quirky shops, great for that typical Japan item. Wander & explore - make sure you go up & down the various streets. Loads of tat shops but between them you can find a unique gem. Also, make sure you visit the shrine hidden down a side street

It was extremely crowded on a Saturday, as there were quite a lot of small food stalls and restaurants, bars, markets and souvenir shops. Prices weren't that bad but be careful on your restaurant selection cos quality can be worse than 7/11. It's worth a visit but I would rather go shopping or eat in malls.

    Interesting shopping area
I enjoyed browsing this area of Tokyo. It's quite characterful with lots of small shops and market like places selling everything you can think of. There are lots of restaurants too that had huge queues of local people (so I assume they were really good!). It was quite busy in some streets but not packed like other areas of Tokyo where you can't move for other people. Some things seemed very cheap so it's a good area if you are looking to do some shopping.

A vibrant maze for everything you didn’t know you wanted to get
An incredible labyrinth of lanes and sidewalks lined with mixed shops each with staff spruiking their products. We enjoyed this place as we found a great seafood/bar that served great oysters and sake. Also enjoyed nearby confectionery stalls in a large department store. It’s a vibrant spot but not an early start most shops open at 11 some even at 12 noon

    Non-pretentious food/snacks/entertainment
Decent value seafood options (including more exotic stuff like shirako, monkfish liver, etc). Has most of the same snacks as in Harajuku apart from crepes. Also some Pachinko and arcade stuff, but not intuitive how to use for foreigners. Felt a little less sanitary in general than other places I've been in Tokyo, but the food still seemed high quality.

Ameyoko is an atmospheric open-air market that offers various stores selling a massive selection of fashion, cosmetics, medicines, and even fresh food at almost ridiculously cheap prices. When we visited, it was raining so there weren't as many people about but it was interesting to see the different shops, stalls, and stores. It is right next to Ueno station so easy to access.

Ameya Yokocho (Ameyoko) is a well known shopping street in Tokyo. It extends along JR Yamanote line near Ueno station. It was originally a place of shopping for local people, but now it becomes a touristic attraction and many foreigners come to visit. You can find many cheap goods. Of course, there are also many things to eat. Anyway it is worth taking a look.

This is probably the best and biggest place to come to shop for dried seafood items such as scallops. Food are also plentiful and it does get crowded. Do note that some stores allow GST refund on the spot if you purchase up to a certain amount.

Best way to see what the locals do is to visit their markets. We took JR train to Ueno station and this street is located just next to the exit. In this busy market street you can buy cooked food, raw seafood, dried food, fresh fruits, clothing, shoes, medicine & health supplements and many others. A must see if you visit Tokyo

This bustling street is jam-packed with everything you could need: clothes, electronics, food, clothes, trinkets, whatever you're looking for. There are vendors calling out their wares, bigger stores, all sorts of shops. A lot of things are knocked-off or you can negotiate.

This shopping street is fun to walk through, but it can get very crowded. There are a lot of shopping stalls selling standard tourist style wears. There are also a lot of restaurants, but it's difficult to tell which ones are good and which ones are just convenient. In addition, there is limited seating for the restaurants and most of Japan has a strict "No eating and walking" policy. If you are looking for your standard souvenirs (magnets, keychains, etc.), this is a great place to go.
