鍾離姓為漢字複姓，源出有二：

  1. 出自嬴姓。周代時，伯益的後人有封國鍾離（在今安徽省臨淮關一帶），春秋時鐘離被楚國所滅，國人遂以原鐘離名命姓，稱鍾離氏。
  2. 可以直接追溯到春秋時代宋微子所建的宋國，算起來是商湯的子姓後裔。由於其始祖曾食采於一個叫作鍾離（今安徽臨淮關一帶）的地方，所以子孫才會「以邑為氏」，開始以「鍾離」或「鍾」為姓。換言之，長久以來為大家所熟悉的複姓「鍾離」及單姓「鍾」，實際上是血緣相同的一家人。
