Globehunters WARNING: avoid this scam!!!

We fell for their cheaper fare on a one-stop flight from SFO to Europe without checking the reviews first. Their agent answered the phone promptly and seemed knowledgeable. Paid and received booking within 24h which we verified with airline. So far so good.

The bad:

1. Airline changed departure time so we can't make the connection on the outbound flight. We found out about this only by chance because my wife called the airline to ask about luggage and seating the family together. Airline sent note to "travel agent" of the ticket, but Globehunters never informed us. Airline says the travel agent just need to send a request to rebook and they will pay for it since it's due to their change.

The ugly:

2. Have been calling Globehunters for about three weeks trying to resolve this (travel is in three weeks!). THEY CONTINUOUSLY LIE saying that we will receive an email in 24-48 hours. This never happens.

3. After much complaining and back-and-forth, we found out that Globehunters got the tickets from a bulk purchaser, whose name they won't reveal and who apparently cannot be reached by phone. So they claim they sent the request to rebook to the bulk purchaser, but it never acts. Maybe because there is some penalty involved. Whatever the reason, we think that this isn't our problem and Globehunters should own up and resolve this for us in a timely matter. We are traveling with small kids and we care about getting a good flight. That's why we carefully selected our flight and booked so long in advance.

4. Any suggestions on what to do now? We could perhaps ask the credit card for a charge-back, but then we would have to rebook now at a much higher price. Airline says that they can only intervene if this situation is not resolved 48h prior to travel date. We are afraid that at that time our second choice flight (Star alliance) may be fully booked.

One ticket? Two ticket? Round trip? So many word but few words of value. One ticket and the issue will work itself out with issues. Two ticket and the issue will not work itself out. Two ticket and the best recommendation is to purchase yet another ticket.

You received what you paid for. No justification for a credit card charge back.

Sadly there's not much you can do. You are at the mercy of Globehounds until T-minus 48 hrs if you don't want to purchase new tickets. And in that case you'd have to see if the schedule change entitles you to a refund from Globehounds. And if it did you'd have to hope you see that refund one day. I also see no reason that will get you a charge back. A very frustrating and maddening situation I know because it is in principle a very common and easily handled situation - schedule change and then revision. Good luck.

Amazing how people who book with 3rd party agents have so many problems

This is why the advice posted on here every single day is to book direct with the airlines

Let's be honest. We only see the cases when something goes wrong. The majority will have no problem since the majority don't make major changes, which even when directly booked with airlines on the majority of tickets, also can't be changed. The real point is that with a third party, when things do go south, usually with schedule changes, cancelled flight and truly major delays, then you're usually up that sh*t creek hung out to dry. So it really comes down to a game of chance and I guess if you book 10x by a third party that your cumulative savings may pay for the screwup on one trip. But you won't catch me booking by a third party.

If you had typed Globehunters into the forum search engine you would have seen lots of complaints about shoddy service, plus a few company shills pretending to be satisfied customers. Here you go.

That's what forums like this is for, research. Not just complaining after the fact having done no research before.

It's a bit hard to see a way out of this that is ideal.

Look at the T&Cs of your contract with Globehunters. Is the ticket refundable, etc? If it is, get out now and get a refund. If it isn't,then you could try calling your credit card company and asking if the charge could be reversed on the basis that you paid for a specific product you did not receive. Neither option is a guarantee and you will most likely have to pay more to buy new tickets.

The other option is to wait til 48 hours before your flight and deal with the airline directly then. It's not ideal, but you do hold valid tickets so you have a contract with the airline; therefore, they have to get you to your destination. You may not get the seats or flights you wanted, but at least you won't be paying more.

A bit of good news: Seems Globehunters is a subsidiary of A1 Travel Deals Ltd, so you may be ATOL protected.

Good luck.

Well, being ATOL protected will be very useful if Globehunters go out of business before you travel without having paid the airline for your ticket, so leaving you without a flight, or if the airline(s) themselves go out of business leaving you stranded. That is, assuming that the flights you bought were accompanied by an ATOL certificate- not all flights are in scope to ATOL by any means.

However ATOL protection is not designed to cover you against poor customer service when the businesses providing it continue trading so you can pursue legal action instead if appropriate. It is nothing more than a compulsory insurance system operated by the UK government to protect consumers against the consequences of travel agents, package holiday companies, or airlines going bankrupt.

I'd be the first to admit that even with the poorest booking sites there are going to be more issue free bookings than problems. But I still think that this tale is a great illustration of why going through a middleman - any middleman - adds a greater risk of problems, worries and frustration compared to booking directly. If it's a shonky middleman, then the risks will be much higher.

Now the OP and family here are in the hands of Globehunters. I hope that they will be rebooked, but even if they are, in the meantime they are facing stress and hassle which are probably not worth the small amount of money they might have saved (at best).

This is two roundtrip tickets, one for myself and one for the rest of the family. That's because we return on different dates. I don't see how that makes a difference. Can you please explain?

@USBusinessTraveller: I actually did lookup Globehunters while I was booking and to be honest the feedback wasn't all negative. Yes, I saw reports of problems but I also saw people reporting no problems. As I said, the agent sounded professional on the phone. Because Kayak linked directly to the deal, I thought they were a legitimate business.
