With a "completed" tabletop campaign of Gloomhaven, two completed campaigns of (tabletop) Jaws of the Lion, an engrossed ongoing campaign of Frosthaven, I think I'm the target audience of this.

Not much matches playing the board game version Gloomhaven for the first time with a friend (or significant other in my case). Dozens of evening sharing a bottle (or two) of red wine while navigating the twists and turns of the game. My partner and I played hundreds of hours and are loving the sequel (Frosthaven - which I think might be even better btw)

However, it's a huge commitment to play it with other friends who have their own partners and family. This excellent digital adaption means I can have the same feeling of discover with a different group. No set-up, no tear down. Just dungeoneering, deck building and discovery.

The mechanics baked into the card play are the STAR of the system and are fully realised here.

The quirks of the board game are also fully realised too (walking across an empty room can sometimes feel as difficult as clearing it of enemies).

But, once you've had your first hard fought win with that last gasp of stamina any clunky aspects of the system fade into background noise.

Play it on +1 difficulty (aka Hard) for maximum risk/ reward or revel in feeling like an unstoppable force of nature while storming through a dungeon on the lower difficulties.

Both feel equally as good. On hard it's almost a puzzle game ("how do I navigate this with the least risk?") on easy it's a superhero wish fulfilment game.

Gloomhaven - it's pretty blooming good!

The narratives are amateur-ish at best. Events are very repetitive ; some are painfully stupid. Roleplay? Lmao. The mechanics are complex and adds depth and strategy, it's true, but randomness can kill your 2-hour scenario in a split second. It's ok, just start again and cross your fingers.
I might have enjoyed GH, the problem is, I am not unemployed.

I can't play more than 1 hour of this game before I have to stop play it! I just can't take it anymore. I want to love this game but really really hate it!
