To explore Bangkok is to brave the heat.
I chose to explore but not brave the heat.
Thus, I chose to visit Khlong Toei Market at night, noting that it was open 24 hours.
Yes, the market is open 24 hours…which does not necessary mean that all the stalls are open.
A handful of stalls are open.
Thus, you do not get to experience the market, at its full blown state, with the hustle and bustle…
plus the “aroma’ of the raw food with the likes of fresh seafood.
Whether you are there in the day or night, be prepared to have rodents roam around freely in your tracks.
If you are keen on getting fresh fruits at pretty affordable prices and you are within the Sukhumvit area,
Khlong Toei is worth a visit.
Across the street is the open air food areas serving local Thai fares.
As the food are mostly cooked fresh, I would say that they are generally safe to eat if you are concerned.
If you are concerned about cleanliness, do not like funny/stinky smell, and cannot take the heat…the Khlong Toei
is not for you.
Or rather, majority of Bangjkok local wet markets are not for you.
The only one I may recommend is Or Tor Kor market, just opposite of Chatuchak.

This is a local wet market and not for the faint hearted. It is packed and stinky in some sections of the market.
Even the market is huge, most of the vendors are selling the same things. I expected a larger variety of vegetables and fruits but it is not the case.
Nevertheless, you pay low prices and receive large quantity of produce as compared to supermarkets.

Incredible market primarily for food. Showed cased in a number of foodie programs such as Andrew Zimmer and late Andrew Bourdain. Open 24/7. Vegetables, fruit, fish, meat and kitchen utensils. As noted by plenty of reviewers don’t wear sandals or flip flops - this is a wet market.

Finally an authentic local market and no tourist scam. Leave out the fresh meat section if you’re too sensitive. The fruits and vegetables sections are amazing. If you want to shop like a local, go there. Prices are amazing and everything is super fresh and fruits are ripe.

The Khlong Toey Market is an amazing assault on the senses, from the smell of raw meat and fish on rickety stands to the sights of entrails and filth. This food market is not for the light-hearted – a walk through the canopied market corridors is a journey into the Thai palette, where every part of an animal is eaten or used and some of the fare on display is enough to make your stomach turn. The smell stayed with me for hours afterwards.
Located by a smelly waterway, the market is an amazing place, full of locals frantically selling all sorts of raw materials, and shoppers bustling to and fro looking for the best products. A very interesting place and quite an experience. I did not see any other tourists there, so expect to stand out a little as you tour around the market. Easy walking distance to the Convention Centre Metro station.
Finally, a little warning - the produce is kept cold on beds of ice, that is constantly melting, so whole market is carpeted in water and the detritus that tips off the stalls with it - Khlong Toey Market is NOT a place to wear your designer shoes! Hardy clothing is recommended.

Cheap fruits, Real thai market 24 hours. you have to visit because you can experience the real Thai market and also easy to go. Take subway to Queen sirikit then 4 minutes walks. HAVE FUN

Khlong Toei is the market to go if you want to discover the local habits and avoid touristic cliches.
To get the take the MRT to Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (closer to the market then Khlong Toei's) and walk to the intersection of Rama 4 with Rama 3. If you're using google maps ignore the marking they have as it is (at the time of this writing) out of place.

The easiest way to visit is to take the subway, MRT, -- cool, inexpensive and a fast way to deal with BKK traffic. This is a huge market. When you exit the subway (Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre station, exit 2), look for the overhead pedestrian crosswalk about 2 blocks ahead. Use this both to cross and to see both sides of the market. The left side is the largest area. This is also called the wet market -- wear non-slip shoes. Merchants hose the pathways and the melting ice makes the areas always wet and a bit slick. You will see beautiful produce, fish, hot food, meats and flowers. You can buy or just look; a woman sold me the most perfect mango I’ve ever tasted. If you are a photographer you’ll love the place; if you are a vegetarian not so much.

I went here in the Mid Afternoon, it was still pretty busy, but not as busy as it would have been in the early morning when the locals visit for their daily grocery shopping.
Khlong Toey is an excellent Farmers Market in the sense it is not a tourist spot, so what you see is real life in Bangkok. Most of the cities restaurants and Hotels buy their produce here, as well as the locals from all over the city.
This market is what the locals pay for produce, all the prices are reasonable and not marked up shy high for tourists.
Its and excellent place to bring your camera for a couple of hours of great photography, the colors and smells are amazing, the vegetables and fruit are so fresh the colors so vibrant.
This is a hidden gem in a fast paced and hurried city. You can make a day trip out to Khlong Toey, visit the market, and then head over to Queen Sirikit National Convention Center and over to Benjakiti Park for a leisurely stroll around the beautiful lake, a true hidden gem.

This is an interesting place to see if you want to do something different in bk. Smell and dirty water are definitely there for a large part of the market but I saw guys who literally drove around a truck full of dead cleaned pig (the whole pig) delivering to different stores. Where else would you see that? I also had the best tasting apples in my life here
However I thought I could have my dinner here. But in my 2 hour tour here I found maybe 3 food stalls that sold the same stuff in Nana plaza so don't expect to eat fresh food on the spot per say.

I’ve been there around 2pm and many stands closed already. If you are planning to visit get there in the morning - seriously not the best spot to visit if you haven’t been to BKK many times
