Detailed airport guideRestrictions on Carry-on Liquids on International Flights

There are restrictions on liquids you can carry on board the aircraft on international flights. Please check these restrictions in advance and prepare your baggage at home

1.Disclaimer

In Japan, security screening of passengers is conducted by each airline under the Civil Aeronautics Act. This website shows typical security screening rules adopted by airlines operating at Narita Airport. However, please be aware that each airline may have its own restrictions.

For more information, make inquiries with your airline or refer to the website of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

2.Restrictions on carry-on liquids

For international flights, all liquids stored in containers with a capacity exceeding 100 ml (g) are prohibited from being brought onto the aircraft. However, you can bring liquids with you in the following cases.

*100 ml (g) = 3.4 ounces

Carry-on items

Liquid can be carried on board the aircraft if it is stored in a container with a capacity of not more than 100 ml (g) and then put into a transparent re-sealable plastic bag with a capacity of not more than 1 liter. If you wish to carry on board the aircraft more than one type of liquid, store each type of liquid in a container of not more than 100 ml (g) and put all containers in a transparent re-sealable plastic bag not exceeding 1 liter (with a length and width not exceeding 20cm).

Follow the instructions shown below when packing liquids to carry on board the aircraft.

Instructions

  • The recommended size of the bag is within 20cm in length and 20cm in width. Expandable bags may not be used.
  • No liquid may be carried on board the aircraft if it is not in a transparent plastic bag.
  • Each passenger can carry only one transparent plastic bag.
  • Even in the case of liquid stored in a re-sealable container of not more than 100 ml, it may not be carried on board the aircraft if it is not in a transparent plastic bag.

Passengers are responsible for purchasing their own transparent plastic bags. These bags are available from convenience stores, DIY stores and other locations. If you wish to buy one from the airport, search for a store under the tag for “Stores selling transparent re-sealable bags” on the page of the list of restaurants and shops.

You need to surrender liquid in carry-on baggage at the security checkpoint if it exceeds 100 ml (g). Please check on this in advance.

In addition to Narita Airport, you may be subject to screening at the airport you will arrive at or the airport you will depart to return home. For more information, make inquiries with your airline.

The size of the clear plastic bag with a zipper for liquids is 24cm x 17cm. Is this size okay? Also, is it okay if there are pictures and words written on the zippered plastic bag?

[International flight] In the rules for carrying liquids, it is specified as a transparent, resealable plastic bag with a zipper and capacity of 1 liter, less than 20 cm on all sides.
