Full name on Vietnam e-visum

When applying for the Vietnam e-visum, I am (more than) a bit confused by The 'full name' requirement on the Vietnam e-visum page. It says: enter your full name (First name Middle name Last name) * (Use international character as in ICAO line). What does this mean?

1) In particular, does the order of the names matter? On the ICAO line (i.e. the two lines at the bottom of the passport) my last name comes before my first and middle name, but the instruction says First name Middle name Last name (i.e. the other way around).

2) Also, I have two middle names. Therefore, under given names in my passport it says First Name #1 Middle name #2 Middle name. Since the names are quite long, they do not fit on the ICAO line at the bottom of the page. There you only see Last Name First Name #1 Middle Name. My #2 Middle name does not appear on the ICAO line. Based on the instruction and the reference to the ICAO line, I am a bit confused whether I should also enter my #2 Middle name under full name? Since it says full name, I would think yes, but I am not sure. Perhaps there are others who also have a name that does not fit on the line and know what to do?

When in doubt, I have always followed the instructions as supplied. Missing out names isn't where you want to go. As I found out recently when we arrived in Hanoi. If your name with middle names included exceed the characters that can be entered, I'd be inclined to put just the first initial of the last one on the form.

In my opinion, the instructions are contradictory to the example shown. I always follow the written instructions and have never had a problem. They are also fairly lax in regards to the order of names as long as they match the names on the passport.

For foreigners maybe but for a Vietnamese, certainly not. Names must be correct as I found out when the family were transiting Hanoi.

I'll give Vietnam Airlines a round of applause. Not only did they print off a temporary ticket with the name as it should be but assisted us when we went to their Saigon office. They not only corrected it for the home flight but also the flight we have done today..... all for free. And it was my fault 100%.

My main worry would always be being denied boarding because of a discrepancy rather than a hiccup on arrival. Anecdotal evidence of others not having a problem won't necessarily convenience a check-in agent to allow travel.

Following immigration instructions and having proof that you have would be the only way I would do this.

Hi Manat and others,

I asked the immigration office but they did not respond and I called the local Vietnamese embassy but also not getting through. I therefore went for the most "complete" full name and also included my 2nd middle name (which did not fit on the ICAO line). Unfortunately my e-visum application got denied because my full name was incorrect.

Since we already fly on Saturday I am not sure what to do now. My idea is to:

1) amend the visum application (i.e. with the name exactly as on ICAO line, that is without the 2nd middle name); and

2) at the same time - as a back up - make a request for the visum on arrival.

Do you have any tips on what is a reliable website for the visum on arrival? And is it possible to do this at the same time (i.e. e-visum application and visum on arrival) or is it one or the other?

There is currently no pre-approved visa letter (what you call visum on arrival) option.

It's E-Visa or nothing.

I always apply for my E-Visa a month before travel in case of any hiccups. Doing last minute is fraught with risk.

Have you tried phoning Vietnamese Immigration during their working hours?

Dear Manat,

On the website I cannot find a telephone number for Vietnamese Immigration. Could you please let me know where I can find this? We will in each case go to the embassy tomorrow to see if they can perhaps help and otherwise we will reschedule flights.

Don't expect any help from the embassy. They're nothing to do with E-Visas.
