The 2024 Oscars proved that no awards ceremony is predictable, with many surprises in store. However, it was not much of a shock that Christopher Nolan’s J. Robert Oppenheimer biopic was the top winner of the night, taking home seven Oscars — including best picture.
Poor Things wasn’t far behind Oppenheimer throughout the night, winning four Academy Awards, including Emma Stone securing her second win for best actress.

Christopher Nolan’s film was the biggest winner of the night, receiving awards for best picture, best directing, best actor (Cillian Murphy), best supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), best cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema) and best original score (Ludwig Göransson).
Poor Things — four wins
Poor Things received the second most wins of the night. Stone won her second Oscar for best actress, while the film also achieved craft awards for best costume design, best production design and best makeup and hairstyling.
The Zone of Interest — two wins
The Zone of Interest won best international feature film and best sound.
Barbie — one win
Barbie, which was the biggest hit of 2023, only snagged one Oscar. Billie Eilish’s collaboration with her brother Finneas won best original song. The odds were good in the category, as Greta Gerwig’s film also had another nomination, “I’m Just Ken,” sung by Ryan Gosling and co-written by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.
The Holdovers — one win
Though Alexander Payne’s film was up for five categories, it only took home one Academy Award. Da’Vine Joy Randolph became a first-time Oscar winner with her role as grieving school cafeteria cook Mary.
American Fiction — one win
While Cord Jefferson’s directorial debut received six nominations, it ended up with only one Oscar: best writing for an adapted screenplay.
Anatomy of a Fall — one win
Justine Triet and Arthur Harari secured the win for best original screenplay.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar — one win
Wes Anderson won his first-ever Oscar under the category of best live-action short film for his adaptation of Road Dahl’s story.
The Boy and the Heron — one win
Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki’s film was named best animated feature.
Godzilla Minus One — one win
The latest Godzilla flick snagged the award for best visual effects — with team members Takashi Yamazaki, Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi and Tatsuji Nojima accepting the Oscar and each accompanied by their own Godzilla toys.
20 Days in Mariupol — one win
20 Days in Mariupol took home the award for best documentary feature film.
War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko — one win
Director Dave Mullins and co-writer Sean Ono Lennon accepted the award for best animated short film.
The Last Repair Shop — one win
The Last Repair Shop won best documentary short film.
