Happy Vyshyvanka Day!
So what exactly is
#Vyshyvanka and why do Ukrainians celebrate it?
Vyshyvanka literally means ‘embroidered shirt’. It derives from the word ‘vyshyvka’, which means ‘embroidery/embroidered pattern’. Vyshyvanka’s patterns can be very diverse, and each region’s typical patterns can represent the customs and traditions of that part of Ukraine.
Vyshyvanka is one of the most widely recognised symbols of Ukraine. During the past several centuries, it has grown to represent not just the Ukrainian culture, but also the Ukrainian identity. That is why annually Ukrainians around the world organise festivals, parades and picnics that celebrate this piece of culture.
In these times when Russia is trying to erase the whole idea of being Ukrainian, vyshyvanka has become the symbol of Ukraine’s resistance and aspiration for freedom. It was reported in April, that the Russian occupation administration in Melitopol ordered to burn vyshyvanka’s they found at a local kindergarten.
Once again, we invite you all to celebrate the International Vyshyvanka Day with us at our Ukrainian picnic on Sunday, May 22. Come show your support for the Ukrainian freedom and self-determination, while enjoying the tasty food and interesting cultural activities!
