The iron house which was not open when we visited was an interesting pierce of history dating back to the Gold Rush days and great that they have been retained particularly with some of the magnificent old houses around..

These were portable Corrugated Iron homes imported to Australia during the 1850's Gold Rush for a supply and demand due to the rising amount of immigrants and shortage of housing. These three are fine examples, one on its original site, of these homes and the harshness of accomodation at the time.
They were very hot in summer and cold in winter. Allow an hour and don't forget to ask questions as the helpful volunteers were very hospitable.
Just remember that this significant property is only open on the first Sunday of each month. If you are looking for a great place for lunch the South Melbourne Market is in walking distance or there is Conners Hotel a couple of doors down.
Great place to visit if you are interested in a little piece of history.

If you love architecture or social history this is a gem. Tucked away in South Melbourne, which has a wonderful history to explore. To think the houses were homes to many working class people and then the lower classes, to think people lived and were happy to do so in these houses. Apparently you ordered them out of a book, placed an order and had them shipped over from England and then you could erect them yourself (if skilled). The way people lived in the 1850s is amazing and the portables are a fine example of that. I was told that the site is managed by volunteers only and I must say, pretty good work they do . They welcomed me and my partner and filled my head with knowledge about the life in South Melbourne in the 1850's, good job!

The museum includes three different examples of English made prefabricated iron house which were imported into Victoria in the 1850s. One was erected on the site while the other two have been re-erected here. There is an excellent introductory video and friendly and knowledgeable guides who explain how these pre-cursors of todays kit-homes were assembled. The kits included everything, roofs, walls and windows with the packing cases used as linings. Down the street you can see a different type of portable house, a timber one from Singapore, while St Vincent's Gardens nearby is lined by magnificent high Victorian mansions. South Melbourne market, a food lovers paradise, is just a short walk away and is the perfect place for lunch. The Portable Iron Houses are easily accessible by tram or rail from the Melbourne CBD.

We live in the area of the iron houses, and have walked by them many times and had intended to one day visit them. I happened to walk past one weekend when it was open to the public and decided to go in and have a look. It was interesting to see how people lived in the past. The small pre-fab homes would have been very cold in winter!
There are few of these iron houses in Melbourne, I believe there is one in Fitzroy. I feel fortunate to have seen three such houses on the Coventry Street sit. The first is an original two storey home, a smaller one in the middle where an audio visual display is shown and a wreck at the back of the block that needs considerable restoration. Take the time to visit if you are ever in the area, you'll be pleased you took time to experience what it would have been like in the old days.

We live in the general area of the iron houses, and had walked by them many times. We'd never got around to going on a tour on the specified day so were delighted to find the portable iron houses were part of Open House Melbourne Weekend.
My great-great-great-grandfather actually brought a portable house with him when he came to make his fortune in the colonies in the late 1830s. There are three houses on the Coventry Street site: one the original two storey home at the front, another small one where an audio visual display is shown in the middle, and a veritable wreck in need of major restoration at the back of the block. All show how people lived in the past. I can only imagine how hot - and cold- the iron-clad residences would have been.
Later portable house were made from timber. Very few of the old iron houses survive and Melbourne is lucky to have three on the one site. Visit and you'll be pleased you took time to experience part of the old days.

A group of 16 people had booked and paid National Trust of Victoria in advance as required for a private tour of the Portable Iron Houses. Arrived 10 minutes early to ensure we were on time. No-one around to open the exhibition. Called H/O after a 15 minutes wait, not terribly interested - should be a property manager on site to open up. Will call back with an update. Another 10 minutes go by.... someone will come out from H/O in about 30 minutes to open up. So they turned up just as mine and another persons parking space runs out. Couldn't attend - very poor form. As another 16 are due to repeat next week I hope that they get their act together. Disappointed is an understatement.

The portable iron houses are quite interesting for anyone wanting to take a peek at the past. While they are definitely worth preserving, I wouldn't consider them an attraction to make a special trip to see. However if you are in the area they are worth a look.

South Melbourne, comprised nearly 100 portable buildings, of which 399, Patterson House, still stands on its original site. Abercrombie House and Bellhouse House were moved to the current sites from North Melbourne and Fitzroy respectively.

A friend who loves photographing local sights took me to see these prefabricated iron houses near the South Melbourne Market. The houses, which are registered by the National Trust of Australia, are significant because few 19th-century portable iron buildings survive worldwide. What you see from the street is a row of three small metal houses: very modest housing dating from 1855. One is original to South Melbourne (called Emerald Hill in its early years); the others have been shifted from other inner suburbs. To see inside the houses you'll need to return on the first Sunday afternoon of any month except January; I've yet to do this. Anyone, adult or child, willing to think about what it was like to live in poor circumstances in Australia's colonial cities will find these buildings noteworthy.
