The area
Neighborhood: Mong Kok
It’s one of the highest density districts in the world, so come to Mong Kok prepared for action. Home to every market, restaurant and shopping arcade imaginable, Mong Kok is the one-stop shop to satisfy all your shopping needs. Dust off your finest negotiation skills and dive into the bartering frenzy. Similar retailers will conveniently congregate in the same area forming easy to remember references such as “flower street” and “sneakers street.” Here you will also find various local delicacies being served at street snack shops or hole-in-the-wall restaurants. One reliable rule of thumb: the smaller the place, the better the food.

    Disrespectful owners
Very nice market for the most part. Great selections of products. We were looking to buy some fans for an event coming up. We went to one of the vendors looking for fans. They had fans but for an expensive price. Our group then went to another vendor who had fans for a cheaper price. We kind of were window shopping on other things of the first vendor. I don't remember exactly what happened but I remember that we would buy the fans if it was 15 HK Dollars. The vendor insisted 20 instead of 15. Most of us couldn't understand Chinese expect one of the people in our group. The vendor in Chinese (Cantonese) called us "STUPID FOREIGNERS!" Continuing (telling her business partner or husband) "These people are trying to bargain!!!!!!" Our Chinese speaker who understood started to get mad and started to argue. One of the people with us stopped her before she flared up. We ended up leaving and buying from the other vendor who was much more respectful and nice. Those vendors who called us Filipinos and Chinese Stupid Foreigners should be ashamed of themselves! At the end of the day they lost out on a lot of money they could've gained! People sometimes! Anyways, every other vendor was respectful, kind, and helpful. Overall great market. Just beware of rude vendors!

    Bargain hunting
Had to pay a visit here during my recent trip to Hong Kong, of course. We didn't attend until later on in the evening, when the vendors were starting to pack things away unfortunately, so make sure to arrive well before 21:00 if possible. There was still plenty of market stall open & selling a variety of "knock-off" designer labels, as well as knick-knacks, souvenirs, etc, so plenty of choice! Be prepared to do some serious haggling though and even walk away from a sale if unreasonable. Would recommend to go to soak up the atmosphere and if you're looking for some cheap gifts.

You have to visit it for more unecessary purchases🙃😁
Our problem was getting there at midday in September with temperatures around 40degrees. Great area for shopping and picking up unnecessary trinkets and goodies. Loved the area, with malls nearby and near Sneaker street.

    Don't go at opening time
My biggest suggestion is to wait at least an hour after it says they open before you go. I went at 11:00 and they were just starting to set up their stalls. I walked around for probably 45 minutes and maybe a third of them were set up by then.

I can only add to what others have said about Ladies Market. It's a fantastic place for gifts, toys, trinkets, bags, wallets and last minute deals before going home. You just have to know how to haggle:

Step 1: Ask the price (answer will always be high)

Step2: Say you'll take a look down the path (price starts going down)

Step 3:Take another step away ( price goes down some more)

*Before haggling, always have cash. None of the dealers use card readers.

* Don't try using the "I need to go to the ATM" excuse to disengage. Some of the most determined shop hands will lead you to one and wait for you to withdraw cash to pay.

*Hand bags are a staple and can be had for a bargain, but know that they are not very durable. My favorite are cartoon and movie character luggage tags that I give out to my soccer team players when I get back from my latest trip. They love putting them on their gear bags. The best deal I got was HK tote bags for all my friends for US $10.00

* Shop from the center of the market and work your way out. The most expensive dealers are at the ends of the market and people tend to stop and buy at the first place they see.

Don't be shy about haggling. It's expected and you'll be happy with your purchases for it.

What was once one of the main attractions of visiting Hong Kong has turned into a very underwhelming experience. We visited the ladies market on a Saturday shortly after 11am but most of the stalls were still not setup and with a very limited selection of goods. The experience with the vendors were pleasant as you have to haggle and bargain for everything that you buy there. But I feel like their initial price has jumped a lot such as 100HKD for a tiny kids lunch kit bag and then quickly dropping all the way down to 50HKD without hesitation. There is a sense of desperation from the vendors as they were aggressive but also very willing to lower their prices. Perhaps these locals have really struggled during / after all of the protests compounded by the pandemic. Many stalls carried the typical HK souvenirs such as magnets, shirts etc... but many of them now carry suitcases. There wasn't a lot of variety of goods. It's really too bad that what was once a fabric of HK has now turned into a very underwhelming experience.

I hope the market will remain sustainable as HK finally opens up to more tourists.

Don’t go here if your a timid shopper, as they will love you. Go here to hone up your negotiation skills and be able to use them when it matters. Lots of fakes and some rude folks in this area. So be careful and remember, that once you ask a price then you will be expected to buy. But negotiations are strong and cut it in half and then another half.
Have found and watch your possessions.

This is a street market supposedly catering to women with several stalls selling "cheung sam" (Chinese style formal dress) and cosplay wear. But otherwise you can find a wide variety of various bargain items. Probably because of Covid restrictions, at the time I visited, quite a few stalls were empty, and there were not many shoppers. But it is still an interesting place to visit, and if not for anything else, just the experience.

Perhaps no street market in Hong Kong has been hit as hard as the Ladies Market in Mongkok by the lack of tourists in recent years. At its peak, the street was buzzing with activity from mid-afternoon until dark with tourists browsing through endless stalls selling all manner of trinkets, travel and souvenir items. This was one of Kowloon's busiest market scenes for many years but that all changed with the pandemic.

For the past couple years, the Ladies Market, similar to the Stanley Market has seemed dead much of the time. The stalls setup much later now than in the past and for good reason - there are no tourists to buy their items anymore. What I've also noticed is that many have changed what they are selling, switching over to household products, clothing and accessories, more luggage and items that local residents might be interested in purchasing. This has probably saved some of the stalls from going under but simply doesn't bring in the crowds like what were seen during pre pandemic times. In many ways, the Ladies Market right now is just surplus to the normal Fa Yuen Street Market a couple blocks over.

The question remains what will become of the Ladies Market going forward. Has it changed forever given that so many of the stalls are selling different items now in order to survive? Or will it return to being a much more tourist focused street market centred on more souvenir type products like what we saw in the past? Only time will tell.

Many souvenir items , but you need to bargain the price. At least 2 counter offer prices. You might get a good price. Better start your shopping in the afternoon. You cannspend from 30 mins to more than an hour. Enjoy your shopping.

We loved this market! Not so much for the items that were being sold, but the experience of negotiation and being told we were “number one people” and “very, very lucky” by the vendors. The sights, the sounds and the smells were wonderful. So glad we left the airport and checked out this area.
