- ccsfamilyGeneva, IL317 contributionsThis is one of the five stops on the all day bicycle tour. We spent about 45 minutes here walking the path around and had a lot of time to take photos. Plus, our bike tour guide provided a lot of interesting information about it. It was crowded; however, there is a lot of space so you could get a good photo and also stop to enjoy the scenery. It's a really beautiful place with a nice five story pagoda, and the main hall on stilts is very impressive. There is a nice walk to a small pagoda where people pray for fertility. The main hall and the views of the main hall with Kyoto in the background were the most crowded areas. At 08:15, the US Army Air Forces dropped the atomic bomb over Hiroshima, and 70,000 men, women, and children were instantly incinerated. The estimated total death toll from this single bomb is believed to be at least 200,000.
Visiting the simple peace museum in Hiroshima and silently confronted with photos of entirely ordinary, often smiling people from before this pivotal moment in history juxtaposed with charred bodies and destroyed objects - and reading that Hiroshima was chosen as a target because the bomb would have maximum effect here - well, it's hard to buy into the official explanations that the A-bomb saved many more lives by ending the war with a definitive bang.
Is there a valid argument for cold-bloodedly killing so many completely innocent people - including tens of thousands of children?
The heart still weeps after visiting the museum and its accompanying peace park. From the station is a short walk to the Dotombori attractions. Tnere are lots of things to see and do here, particularly tasting and eating the various famous local cuisines of Osaka.
I tried the Omanyaki and the Squid Balls. Serving sizes are big, I brought my leftover foods back to the hotel. Also noted delicious to eat are the big brown cookie with lots of melted cheese inside. We walked through the first underpass across the carpark below the train track and turned right. The Sendagaya entrance is just ahead and it is about 5 mins walk. Normally this park is closed on Monday but during the cherry blooming season, we could visit it on a Monday. This park is very peaceful and provides a good break from the city atmosphere.
