The central mystery on Freeform's Pretty Little Liars has always been unmasking the latest "A" torturing the core group, and in six seasons, there have been plenty of fake-outs. Below, The Hollywood Reporter dives into who actually was "A" — like Charlotte DiLaurentis (Vanessa Ray) and Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish) — and who was just wearing a black hoodie to help his or her friends.
-
Charlotte DiLaurentis (Vanessa Ray)
Charlotte DiLaurentis — who was Alison DiLaurentis’ brother, Charles, who later transitioned to Charlotte — was revealed as the ultimate “A” in the season six summer finale. She was known to the Liars as CeCe Drake at school, but then tortured them behind closed doors at her dollhouse. She was mysteriously killed in season six. -
Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish)
Mona was unmasked as the original “A” in season two and then sent to Radley Sanitarium. She faked her death in season five, but it was later discovered that she was double-crossed by new “A” Charlotte DiLaurentis and held captive in her dollhouse throughout season six.
-
Sara Harvey (Dre Davis)
Sara worked closely with Charlotte when she was “A.” She was Red Coat and The Black Widow (at Wilden’s funeral) throughout the series.
-
Toby Cavanaugh (Keegan Allen)
Toby was part of the “A” team in season three, but he later explained that it was only to help protect Spencer (Troian Bellisario).
-
Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario)
In season three, Spencer joined Mona on the “A” team, but she only used it to find out more information about Red Coat. She was later kicked out for acting as a double agent.
-
Mary Drake (Andrea Parker)
Mrs DiLaurentis’ twin, Mary, seems to be the latest version of “A” at the end of season six. She and Dr. Elliot Rollins (Huw Collins) — who married Alison so they could take over the Carissimi Group — may be working with some version of Uber “A” to avenge Charlotte’s death.

Other Potential Members
Mona revealed that Lucas Gottesman (Brendan Robinson), Melissa Hastings (Torrey DeVitto, pictured), and Darren Wilden (Bryce Johnson) were also part of the “A” team at some point.
