This small temple is easy to visit because it is located in the middle of the Tai O town plaza. It stands alongside the Kwan Tai temple so you can see both at the same time. The main doors on the right belong to the Tin Hau temple and next to it, on the left, is the much larger Kwan Tai temple. Both are free to enter.
The temple was built in 1772, around 300 years after the Kwan Tai temple. It is dedicated to the very popular Tin Hau, goddess of the sea and is a reminder that Tai O is very much a traditional fishing village. Local fishermen owed their lives to calm seas and their livelihoods depended on bringing home good catches so it’s not surprising that Tin Hau was worshipped in Tai O. There is a second Tin Hau temple a little further out of town.
The narrow façade is relatively plain, with white tiles, a classic dark green ceramic tiled roof and red banners flanking the entrance. Inside, the small room is much more colourful, with a rich red and gold shrine and the atmospheric, smoky incense.

There are quite a few old temples scattered around the historic seaside village of Tai O including this small Tin Hau Temple situated adjacent to the larger Kwan Tai Temple at the community square along Kat Hing Backstreet in the middle of the village. I like popping in and having a look at both of these temples during visits to Tai O. They are well situated and can be viewed conveniently while exploring the village.

As the name implies, the temple is dedicated to the goddess Tin Hau. The temple's history dates back to the late 18th century. What you will find is a simple, single hall, two-bay architectural structure. It shares a decorative facade with the Kwan Tai Temple as well as a side wall which includes an opening so that you can pass between the two temples directly from the interior.

You'll find a simple shrine with deity figures, ancient bell and a few other items of worship. Then probably best to spend your time in the larger, more impressive and interesting Kwan Tai Temple, which has quite a bit more on offer to feast your eyes upon.

There are actually two Tin Hau Temples in Tai O. One is southwest of the main sightseeing area and bus terminus. This is the older of the two by around 50 years.

The second is located along the Kat Hing Backstreet at the Tai O community square. This Tin Hau Temple was built in 1772 and is attached to the larger Kwan Tai Temple. There are separate entrances but they share the same architectural style and wall which is open from within, making the temples more or less a single building structure.

The temple is dedicated to the popular goddess of the sea called Tin Hau. In fact, you will find quite a few temples in honour of Tin Hau throughout Hong Kong. The small exterior entrance is attractive, with decorate facade features. Within, you will find a small shrine area and as mentioned above, access to the larger Kwan Tai Temple part of the building.

You can give both the Tin Hau and Kwan Tai temples a brief look-see while exploring this backstreet of the Tai O. A 5-10 minute visit can be comfortably done before moving onward to other sightseeing around the village.

集落の中心にある小さな廟。朝は地元の人がお参りしている。線香の煙で柱の色も変わっていて味わい深い。近くが飲茶のやっている店なので、ご飯はそこで食べるのも良い。
