Subject: MAKYOUDEN for the Nec PC. 9801
The gameplay dynamics of this game is completely different than that of the actual or posterior visual novel games. This game requires you to change those dynamics otherwise you aren't going to enjoy it. There's little t no automatization of events: the game requires your permanent input to advance dialogs, to check states, to kickstart events. The 99% of it's gameplay mechanics are passive: even the battle system feels like a cinematic interface disguised to display the greatly achieved animations, with zero agency nor mayor implications from your inputs (never used the defense button once in all my playthrough).
This game NEEDS you to keep it going. There where some cryptical phases when you are forced to track every inch of the background with the magnifying glass tool to specifically trigger an event that seemed after, deliberately random. No you don't get to fight the giant crab (sorry for the spoilers) he is there just to obstruct the way as an unbeatable enemy. There are some great spaces and characters that are just cosmetic rubbish remaining just as eye candy and feel mostly unrelated to the one and only plot, that only serve to disperse the narrative and keep you wandering without reason. It's like an anime ova that requires permanent button pressing to advance at all.
However, I enjoyed it. I was even left speechless at the beautiful high quality animations. The story is as modest as many late 80's anime productions. You can beat the whole game in 2 hours limited only by the speed of the hardware it runs on. On emulators like Anex 86 it you can speed-run it without hassle. There's fair share of wandering around if you don't keep on with the plot, and a couple of times when the game leaves you almost lost. It could be described as some sort of visual novel camouflaged as a point and click adventure game with RPG battle like mechanics and top notch 16-bit concept art and background design.
You need to watch the intro to get a hold of the plot. Otherwise you'll be walking sightless the first half of the game.
There's not much info around to know if there are more endings or different paths to follow than the ones that can be found around, by Jan 2024. The end hint's a possible sequel that never materialized.
This game is a love letter to 80's anime, it has great animation and it'd be appealing to people who like the so called "pixel art". It's a short game if you keep on with the story. gameplay is the complete oposite to visual novel like games of these days to it's own detriment, for "modern" gamers accustomed to more automatized dynamics it can seem just unbearable to have to force a game to play on. Let's say it's gameplay hasn't aged as well as it's atmosphere and visual design.
I was 3 when this game came out, and to my fellow contemporary gamers: the hassle of venturing out this far into obscure region locked content for PC/Console hybrid Japanese hardware, non-officially translated titles like these even played on emulators are of a particular taste, when even managing to run them properly is a challenge... They add a complete new meaning tot the word gaming.
*Use Anex 86 emulator for Makyouden.

I must mount the big image on the IDE #0 and the small image (floppy) in the FDD2 right? I do so but I only get a black screen.
Where can I find a patch for this game so I can try patching it myself?
Thanks.
