- Charles_and_SusanNottingham, UK7,138 contributionsThis is a bit of an anomaly. It was recently a church then a museum but now part of it, the ground floor, is a mosque. It had the longest queue of the places we visited. It is magnificent inside but you don't get to feel the scale of it as tourists are only allowed to walk around the gallery level looking down into what is now the mosque.
You still see the highlights but when you compare it to other mosquest where you we encompassed in a great space this doesn't give you that feeling. If you're scedule was tight and you had to miss a mosque I'd make it this one. Shame really.Written May 10, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. That it is now possible to wander around and see the construction and the enormous size of this cistern is just great. Recycing is not as modern an idea as we like to think. Look araound at the columns supporting the roof, they are all reused from previous structures. The ones that aren't quite tall enough to reachf floor to roof have stone blocks under them. Many different capitals and styles.
It's noticable that the modern columns replacing a few that were broken are made in concrete and much thicker than the originals. Statues too that would have been under water.
Apparently it was abandoned eventually as the water running into it from the mountains brought with it sediment. When it was discovered it was a huge task to clear it out. It was well worth it, it's amazing.Written May 10, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Its dome is 23 meters wide.
The only draw back that the entrances were missing a hand rails and ramps for wheel chair.Written May 13, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - Randy BGeneva, IL19 contributions
