薄墨桜公園から車で５分ほど。
教科書にも出てきた根尾谷断層。
看板が無いと普通に通り過ぎます。
今は普通の農地の一角になっているので、
看板があってもよく見ないと気が付かない可能性が高いです。
でもよく見るとなんだか不自然で、断層としての納得感があります。
地面をこれだけ移動させるエネルギーはものすごいのだろうと
自然の力の大きさにびっくりします。

根尾谷断層が明治時代の濃尾地震でできたことを、確か中学校時代の地理の授業で習ったような記憶があります。教科書の写真でしか見ていなくて、実際この目で断層を見てビックリしました。最初は、道路から斜め左に堤防ができているようにしか見えなかったです。車を道路の脇にある駐車スペースに駐めて、改めて看板や案内板をじっくり見て断層が大きくズレたのだと実感できました。自然の猛烈な威力に圧倒されました。

マグニチュード8.0を記録した濃尾地震によりできた断層を見ることができる施設です。垂直方向に6m ずれた地層をトレンチで観察できます。震源から離れた木曽川や名古屋でもかなり被害があったことが館内の記録資料からもわかります。

根尾谷断層は1891年の濃尾地震でできた80kmにもおよぶ活断層。樽見鉄道水鳥駅から徒歩5分ほどのところに断層崖(土地の上下のずれ)を見ることができる。ただし目立つ地形ではないので看板がなければ断層崖と気付くことはないかもしれない。この断層崖の近くには地震断層観察館があり、そこでは室内で本物の断層断面を見ることができる。

樽見鉄道水鳥駅から南へ徒歩若干。近くの見学用スペースや展望台から一望できます。
道路に沿って北の方を眺めると、農地の脇の土手が目に入ります。なんか不自然にまっすぐな斜面。
「これが断層か！」とわかりました。
明治年間の地震がいかに凄まじかったのか、地震の脅威を改めて知りました。

明治時代に岐阜、愛知、福井に大きな被害を与えたM8.0の内陸地震である濃尾地震で地表に現れた地震断層が根尾谷断層です。田んぼの中に現れた高さ5mの断層崖の地震直後の写真は社会の教科書にも載っていました。今でもその断層崖は国の天然記念物として保存されています。断層上にある地震断層観察館では地下で断層が上下に6mずれた事実を目の当たりにできます。薄墨桜から1kmちょっと下流にあります。

昔あった内陸最大の地震である濃尾地震の傷跡です。駐車場に入って見ないとよくわからないです。入ってみて段差には驚かされます。記念写真を撮る場所があるからそこから見ることを勧めます。

樽見鉄道の水鳥駅で1時間に1本ほどの鉄道を待っているときに、明治の大地震でできた断層の観察館への散歩道があるのを知りました。道の先には茶色の三角屋根の観察館が見えます。道路から観察館に向かうと断層の上を歩いていることに気づきました。すっかり緑が生え、普通の道路。ずれる前の写真を見るとその変化に驚かされます。

明治時代に発生した濃尾地震の震源地、この時に現れたのが地震断層がこの根尾谷断層だそうです。最大で高さ6メートルも地面が連れたそうです。断層の前に立ってみてその高さ、これだけのずれを起こさせた濃尾地震のエネルギーの膨大さを実感する事が出来ます。
近くには根尾谷断層が一望できる展望台があります。
写真では上下が段差になってずれているように見えます（縦連れ）が、実は左右の横連れも発生しているそうです。展望台に立ってみると良く分かるのですが、断層を通る道が、断層を境にして左右にズレテいます。
