If you make your way to the nice little town of Ennis, this monument dedicated to Ali is worth the quick stop for a photo op. The Champ was here in 2009 for the ceremony as his Great Grandfather was Irish.

From O'Connell St, walk up past the Cathedral in the direction of the one-way traffic, cross the road at the traffic signals and continue on for a few hundred yards on Turnpike road. In the 1950s, the houses here replaced the old thatched cabins of the Turnpike. The memorial stands on the place where Muhammad Ali's great Grandfather's home was situated.
In 2009 the three-time heavyweight champion of the world was greeted with a civic reception in the Co Clare town to commemorate the fact that his great grandfather - Abe Grady - came from Ennis. After living on Turnpike Road, Grady emigrated to the United States in the 1860s where he made his home in Kentucky and married an African-American woman who had been freed from a life of slavery.
They had a daughter - Odessa Lee. She then met and married Cassius Clay Sr and on January 17, 1942, Cassius junior was born.

Memorial on the site where Muhammad Ali's Great Grandfather, Abe Grady's home once stood. In 2009, Ali was given the honor of being designated he very first person to receive the title of honorary freeman of the Clare town. We read about the memorial in our guide book but had trouble finding it. The locals weren't familiar with the site as it sits in a small park.

Since I am also from Louisville, Kentucky, I wanted to see the memorial and pay my respects to a fellow Kentuckian. I have added the site to Trip Advisor and written a review for fellow travelers to find the monument.

Depressing homage to a great man. Uggh. Don't go out of your way to see this but look up his life on Youtube from the comfort of your home.

The statue is located in a residential area of Ennis and can be missed easily. It's not worth going to.

This is just behind our house! Muhammad Ali had a grandfather from Ennis, and many of the pubs are proud to display newspaper clippings from Muhammad Ali's visit to Ennis. A lovely park and a sweet monument to him.
