Modern, electric street filled with shops, eateries, and lovely restaurants tucked away up above the street level. Some can be tricky to find but are worth the effort.

Long pedestrian street with lot of expensive brands. Street is normally very crowded and be notice there is a lot of people who came to you by start discussion "where are you from". Mostly they do not just like to chat with you, purpose is sell something to you with over price (can be goods, recommend bar who cheat you etc.). For me, Nanjing road is place to avoid i can see colourful lights also somewhere else.

I arrived post 2 month lockdown to be fair and I guess the lower class are in a bad situation. I met a local girl who immediately took me to a chinese seafood restaurant. I told her I dont like Chinese seafood and I wasnt very hungry but she said they had other things and we just eat something quickly. I have lived in China for 8.5 years and this place was medium/low quality restaurant at best. I speak quite good mandarin but somehow she managed to order enough food to feed a small army including lobster which in normal chinese fashion had been overcooked and chopping into pieces guts and all. This is why I hate chinese seafood to begin with. I ate almost nothing and she drank the bottle of wine to herself. I was ready to pay the bill which I guessed to be around 1500rmb and leave this girl as quick as possible. Much to my shock it was 7700 RMB and I saw all the staff quickly get into their position to guard my escape. Its all a big scam. SH is a terrible place. The upper class wants nothing to do with you and any local that approaches you is just a poor person attempting to exploit you with a tea or food scam. If you come here all I can recommend is paid reputable tours. Expensive chinese food if you like Chinese food maybe thats good. The only redeeming thing about SH is that it has the best western food of anywhere I have been in China. I also enjoyed seeing the river and the skyline. SH is checked off my list but a huge disappointment. Perhaps my timing was bad.

Much like Oxford street in London, Nanjing road is filled with towering buildings filled with shops from around the world, from Apple to Starbucks, there are street vendors down side streets selling everything from traditional clothes to figurines and memorabilia. The street is always packed with people from all over the planet, you'll never be too far away from people speaking English but you will also have to deal with people insisting you buy fake bags or watches, or following them for a massage, just ignore them. This long stretch of road towers over you on both sides and you could spend hours exploring the malls inside each of them, there are restaurants, shops and even a Madame Tussaud's.

This was our first experience of China outside of our hotel. We took a visit here to 'acclimatize' to Shanghai. We found it easy to get around, even with a pram. It was a warm day when we visited, it was easy to get refreshments or find a spot to have a short rest when needed. Lots of big name branded stores and some local outlets/brands as well

Nanjing Lu is a busy street with all kinds of people around the world. Best to go is on Dec-Jan . Many shops and malls to visit. Prices are not cheap. Shanghainese will tend to smoke everywhere (outdoor or indoor). I advise to wear face mask for better health. For first time tourists, it is worth the trip.

This is a very long road with lots of shops. It is probably the main shopping road in Shanghai. You have East and West Nanjing Road. To visit the Bund, you need to exit from East Nanjing Road station. We found that it was more pleasant to walk here at night. However, this road is crowded.

I love how busy this street always is. It’s in central area in Shanghai, and perfect place for many occasions - solo shopping, friends hangout or dates. You get to see all walks of life here, and good places for street photography

Shanghai's shopping street, Nanjing Road, starts at the Bund in the east and ends in the west at the junction of Jing'an Temple. It is a must-see destination attracting thousands of fashion seeking shoppers from all over the world. A lot of stores on the road offer countless famous brands, and traditional products. Shopping lovers will immerse themselves in the joy of purchasing here.

Nanjing Road is a place teeming with dangerous fraudsters. I was walking around when I approached by a woman for massage/sex. I told them I wasn't interested in any sex. But I was in two minds for a massage but was skeptical of a prostitute of giving me a massage. They saw my dithering and almost pulled me in with intense coaxing. She tugged me into the restaurant on a top floor. They got a youngish-looking Asian girl who started giving me a shoulder massage. We confirmed the price at 100 RNB. After 5-10 mins she started to feel me up. I stopped her and said - that's it! And I started to get dressed up. She said 200 RNB for oral sex and hand job. I said a firm No and started to get dressed up. At that time, a waiter hurriedly entered the room and kept 7-8 scotch glasses on the table. I said I didn't order - they said the girl ordered and they said it was $3000 RNB which I have to pay. In addition, I have to pay 5000 RNB for room charge. I knew I had gotten trapped in a con game. Two tough looking guys entered the room and started demanding money. One had blocked the exit to the the room and was giving me the stare. I told them I didn't have any money. Then a long round of negotiations started - they kept telling me - you don't want trouble here, you can pay by credit card, give all the cash in your wallet. I told them my credit cards don't work here and I don't have any money in my wallet. I was pretty aggressive too. I told them - YOU don't want any trouble from me. Finally I told them, we'll settle at 1500RNB. he started demanding 2000 RNB. I told him you have two choices - 1500 and we call it even. 2000 and I go to the nearby Police Station and complain about them. They started laughing at me. Finally I had to pay 2000. As soon as I stepped out, I noted the name of the restaurant and made visible inquiries as to where the nearby Police Station was. I walked to the nearby Police Station and was waiting there for about 5-10 mins waiting to talk to a Police officer, when the girl from the restaurant came in and gave me all my money back. All 2000 of it! Bottom Line: Don't ever get a massage or even talk to street girls outside your own hotel room or a restaurant of your choice. Don't be afraid to go to Police if you know you're in the right. If you had sex with a prostitute, you cannot go to police. They will put you in prison. try not carrying a lot of cash in your wallet. I would still recommend this place as an experience. The shopping is not that great if you know what cheap Chinese trinkets look like. But its a nice walk on a busy street and would have been nicer if you don't get approached by touts at every nook and corner. I got approached by at least 15 in One hour!

What metro stop is Nanjing Lu?
senior travelers
San Francisco, CA294 contributions
On the west side of Nanjing road, the metro stop is Peoples Square. This is where line 1,2 and 8 intersect. On the east side of Nanjing Road, the metro stop is East Nanjing Road. This is where line 2 and 10 intersect. Therefore based on where your hotel is, try to get on the metro line 1, 2, 8, or 10 and you can get to Nanjing Pedestrian st.

I would plan 2 - 3 hours for the walk and window shopping. If you want to actually spend time shopping then add a hour or so!

I would say wait until you are there and see - if some shops are closed there will be lots of other entertainment for you to participate in.

Although the Chinese New Year is a holiday, Nanjing Road is a touristy area. The shopping malls should be open the stores should be open. There will be crowds walking down the street. The side streets are pretty quiet, those shops and restaurants will probably be closed.

I'll be going to China in May and wanted to find a place that takes couples pictures in traditional Chinese dress with hair, make-up, and accessories. Does anyone know if there are any shops in the area that do this? If so, how much per person?
Thank You!

Hi,
Near Nanjing road you'll find a lot of international brand shops. But try the streets alongside and in parallel where you 'll get some more local shops including some barber shops. Try Beijing east road e.g. or the Sichuan middle road....good luck and have a lot of fun!!!
