As a U.S. pilot on a 26 hour layover here, I had searched Google in the USA before arriving. Besides one or two low resolution pictures and a couple blog posts on this, there was very little to be found. I figured anything was better than sitting at the hotel, so I went. Once I paid my 15 Yen/3 USD (cash only) admittance, I was blown away! The meticulously manicured grounds of this public park are far more sprawling than the couple photos available on line show. There are 4 main plazas in this park. The first are is the entrance courtyard with the 3 temples looming at the top of a high majestic waterfall of stairs. There are numerous statues carvings and small pagodas which line every plaza and, the entry plaza is no exception. Well groomed and strategically positioned foliage is abundant. In many paces between the slabs of walkway pavers issues forth plums of mist, and the fragrance of Taoist incense quaffs subtly through the air. These effervescence help to intensify the spiritual vibe that overwhelms you on your walk though this breathtaking park. Once you reach the top where the three temples are, you'll find that each is lavishly finished, not only on the outside, but on the inside too. Golden statues of Taoist deities occupy each temple and an air of stoicism is observed by all, Taoist, or not. Just when you think you've seen the park, an exploratory stroll behind the center temple has you overlooking a plaza of the Chinese Zodiac animals, complete with it's own massive square structured pagoda and outlying, surrounding buildings. And still, beyond that, venturing through more high and heavily decorated gates are ponds, more pagodas, and finally, the plaza of Confucius. This is a massive open plaza with a huge elevated platform surrounded by more water effects and glacial-slab life bronze wall casings, all depicting Taoist and imperial dynastic history. The final building, behind the massive (probably 3 stories tall) meditating statue of Confucius, is yet another painstakingly and lavishly decorated building placing a well balance end-cap to the park. They do have refreshments including cold water, soft drinks and ice cream snacks for purchase in the plaza of the Zodiac. While you're here be kind and be quiet. There are actual Taoists who come here to meditate. So cool. Highly recommend. The park closes it's doors to admittance around 4:30 pm and the final door at the front gate was closed and the park empty by 5:05. ENJOY!

Well worth a visit. We travelled by car, with a few stops along the way from Guangzhou. There is a number of temples, with a major statue of Laozi, along with some beautiful gardens and water features!

Bellissimo tempio

Il Tempio taoista di Yuen Yuen è stato davvero un bel posto da visitare. L'area è tentacolare e incontaminata. Ci sono molti posti interessanti da vedere all'interno del complesso e merita davvero una visita.

Very nice to see the temple and different colorful buildings shining under the sun. It is relatively easy to reach it. Take Metro line number 9 (get off Auto City stop) and then you maybe have 2km on foot or just stop a taxi. Once you reach it you get to see a nice and peaceful place to spend a couple of hours away from busy GZ. Certainly recommend it!

Amazing Taoist complex with several temples, so much to see. Definitely worth the trip! We went there with a mini bus from Guangzhou city center and combined it with a visit to the nearby Langtou Village.

SWMBO and I had passed this temple twice in recent times, first last year when we went to ShiTouJi Stone Shop (TA reviewed) and then earlier this year when we visited Hong XiuQuan’s Former Residence (TA reviewed). Each time we’d reckoned it was worth a visit and even though the weather didn’t look too promising off we set at 10 o’clock reckoning on 2 hours to get there.

First, we took the #706 electric bus which starts from GuangZhou zoo and endured a truly two-hour awful journey to HuaDu with innumerable roadworks. We got off at XuiQuan Park and celebrated with brief visit to the park for a comfort break and a look at the MiG plane. Then it was out the park, turn right and cross the road and a 100 metre walk to HongMian Avenue, turn left and cross the road and we waited for the #21 bus. It’s a nine-stop journey to the temple bus stop of Yuan Xuan Dao Guan. The temple entrance is about 50 metres further on from the bus stop.

Note: GuangZhou travel cards are accepted in HuaDu. There is a metro station in HuaDu and there’s #21 bus stop just along the road.

We arrived at the temple at one o’clock. Tickets are ¥20 each but SWMBO waved my passport and told the lady I was ancient, so I got in for half-price. The temple closes as 6 o’clock and the last tickets are at 5 o’clock.

Our first priority was to sate SWMBO’s hunger so off we walked to the vegetarian restaurant. I’m not a vegetarian and the thought of a meal of lentils and beansprouts gave me deep foreboding. The waitress was charming and looked at me and told my wife that ‘foreigners’ liked the vegetable curry. Sounded good to me! Spring rolls as well? Even better. A bowl of boiled rice? Of course. Now my killer questions, how about a bottle of beer? A big bottle Pearl River for the foreigner is no problem was her reply. Smashing! SWMBO had a bowl of noodles and vegetables. She said she didn’t like curry but nevertheless helped herself to most of the broccoli and cauliflower just to see what a mild curry tasted like! SWMBO also tucked into the spring rolls to compensate for me trying some of her noodles. All in all, a brilliant ¥86 meal.

At two o’clock we began to explore the temples and grounds. Expect lots of walking as there’s lots to see. SWMBO had purchased a bundle of joss-sticks so each colourful temple had to visited. I contented myself with the fish pond as I’d thoughtfully come with fish food. The fish certainly enjoyed my offerings. Quite a few rests as we let our dinner digest, the best being on the swing-seat by the pond.

I was beginning to think Taoism is the way for me! Then again, it may have been the influence of curry, beer and beautiful and scrupulously clean surroundings.

By five o’clock we were back at the entrance. I think we’d seen all the temples and gardens but SWMBO’s sure there were more and reckoned another visit is called for. I think she just wants another vegetarian meal.

Anyway, we crossed the road and caught the #21 bus back to XinHu Building Bus stop. Now for a change of plan, from this stop we caught the #702 coach back to SanYuan Li (see TA for its anti-British Martyr Memorial Hall review) bus station in GuangZhou. Extravagant at ¥12 (GZ travel card accepted) but the extra comfort and much quicker journey was well worth it. Coaches are every 15 minutes. A three-stop bus ride and a short walk and we were back home.

A grand day out!
