Corn vs Wheat – What’s the Healthier Choice?

With so many food options out there, it can be hard to choose. Here’s a bit of guidance to help get you through the supermarket.

Carbs get a bad rap these days. As humans though, we actually do need to eat them in order to produce the energy we need.

So, is grabbing some corn chips better for you than toasting up another slice of whole wheat bread?

It depends on what you’re looking for.

In general, if you’re looking for a denser source of fuel, wheat is the better way to go. That being said, if you’re avoiding gluten, obviously corn is going to be your closer friend.

When it comes to calories, wheat offers you more, clocking in at 339 calories per 100 grams, whereas corn will only offer you 86 calories for the same amount. And corn holds a lot of water, something wheat doesn’t.

As for protein, wheat has more than you might expect, with around 14 grams of protein per 100 grams. Corn offers you way less, with less than 19 grams of protein per 100 gram serving.

Wheat is also generally higher in minerals than corn. For its part though, corn will give you a wider assortment of vitamins, containing vitamin C, B vitamins, as well as A, E and K.

And corn, in its natural form, will also give you more “fibrous benefits” than wheat will. So, it all depends on what you’re after. Have them both in your day as part of balanced diet and you’re good to go.
