This is a small temple hugging the large boulders along the coastline in Stanley Ma Hang Park. Constructed in 1805 by local fisherman, the temple is dedicated to Pak Tai (God of the North). It also has a connected history with the famous local pirate named Cheung Po Tsai which you can read about on the information panels located on the walkway in the park just before you reach the temple.

The exterior of the Pak Tai Temple faces the sea, because of its small size, there isn't much to see of the exterior other than the subtle entrance decoration and images of deities on the side facing the walkway. The interior is a small hall room with shrine and deity figures. Ancient drum, bronze bell and a few other traditional items can be seen as well.

Just outside the temple, you can also see an ancient water well situated down a small staircase at the side of the Pak Tai Temple. There is also a large boulder with engravings just above the outdoor seating area. These are worth a quick look-see as well if you make the effort to find and see the Pak Tai Temple at Stanley.

This is a hidden gem at Stanley which most tourists never get to see. It’s only a short 10-15 min walk from the famous Stanley Market but few people know it’s there. The ancient and colourful temple seems to hang precariously on the cliff-side. It’s unexpectedly beautiful with an uninterrupted view over Stanley Bay and out to sea.
Local villagers banded together to build this temple for the god Pak Tai in 1805. At the time, Stanley was the largest fishing village in Hong Kong. Pretty much everyone’s livelihood depended on calm seas and plentiful catches and Pak Tai was a god of the sea who could protect fishermen and their boats.
The Stanley coastline was also home to the famous pirate, Cheung Po Tsai who terrorised the coastline and is said to have had a tunnel that ran between the temple and a secret treasure hoard (it was sealed off after Cheung Po Tsai surrendered).
GETTING THERE: To find the temple, head to Ma Hang Park, near Stanley Plaza. The park itself is also hidden but if you go to Blake Pier, then turn right and walk around the back of Murray House, you’ll see the entrance. Before you go in, check out the map at the start which shows where the temple is (it’s helpful to take a photo of the map as there are several paths throughout the park). Entry to the park is free and it’s open between 7am – 8pm.
