I can't comment on the food or a full night's stay since this was a day trip. But for all those looking for a private onsen where tattoos are not an issue, and you only want to use the facilities, then this was an amazing option!
We were greeted warmly by several staff members as soon as the taxi stopped. Then our luggage was whisked to the reception desk. Between the clerk who could speak a little English and out limited Japanese, the check-in process was quick and pleasant.
Our room decor was mainly Japanese with a calming effect but with western beds and bathroom. We took advantage of the room amenities; hot water, green tea, rice crackers.
The public onsen was very clean and neat. We bathed at 5:00 pm and we basically had the entire area to ourselves. We bathed again the next morning at 5:00 am and again had the entire bath to ourselves. The water temperature both times was perfect and the ambience of the public and private baths were incredible.
Our included meals, dinner and breakfast, were of excellent quality and very tasty. Dinner was served on trays with many small dishes arranged beautifully. Breakfast buffet offered both western and Japanese dishes.
Would I go back to the onsen? Yes definitely!!!
All guests have to keep their shoes in a cabinet on arrival and walk around the whole hotel bare footed! You would then assume everywhere should be in tip top condition but No. We found little crawling bugs on the room floor mat and bathroom shelves and floors are covered with a layer of dust! After walking around a while, your feet is dirty!
They try to clean your luggage wheels on arrival on a very small piece of rug and physics will tell you not the whole wheel is cleaned and there is not enough space on the rug for the wheel to turn a full round! Staff is just going through the motion!
All furnitures and Yukata clothings are old and worn out. This killed our desire to wear them and go to their onsen! How clean will be their onsen!
Japan is a very clean country and we have not encountered such a run down and dirty hotel! Never stay here again!
It all started with bad instructions on the Google map and tried to contacted the staff here and got horrible engish help. We found our way They didn't even bother to come look for us and ended up just trying to get us checked in and thats all. The building is old and staff is unfriendly.
Gave us no option on the changing close in fact offered the ugliest for us to wear. And did I mention we are on the smoking floor? Yep. You are screwed if you are sensitive then too bad for you.
Well, this taught me never trust reviews again.
1) Hotel location is nice. Right in front of Arashiyama station
2) Hotel has big public bath and 5 private baths. Free ice lollipops throughout the day, free ramen at night from 2230 to midnight
3) Thann shower gel and shampoo were provided which is nice
Cons:
1) this hotel has nice facilities and potentials but the main problem is the service and the staff. The receptionists and staff were rude to us and they did not care about solving our problems nor providing suggestions. (i.e. we added one more guest to our booking and it turned out the guest could stay in the room but no meal could be provided and the reason they provided was that there was not enough seats but we (3 ppl) had a table for 4 (!!) which we couldn't understand at all. The hotel was only willing to refund 3000 yen for not being able to provide the meal but we think it costed a lot more than 3000 yen? It turned out our friend had to eat at the cafeteria alone next to the hotel. All they said to us the whole time was just 'I don't know'.
2) We asked for cup delivered to our room but the staff again showed us he was impatient with his words and body language.
3) We got shouted out from the bar while we were chilling there
4) The quality of dinner and breakfast was not on the par compared to other ryokans I've been
All in all, this is one of the worst ryokan experience I've had (I've been quite a lot all over Japan) and I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. I believe you have a lot more better choices given the price you are willing to pay to stay at this hotel.
(2 staff were actually nice and I would like to give them credits: The old ramen chef at the night snack bar and a young (20yr old) lad who serves at the restaurant. Thank you for your warm smiles which was a bit of a comfort during the 2 days stay!
This hotel is about food, but if you prefer a holistic experience, please plan additional hours of travel to somewhere farther.
The staff appeared pleasant at first but weren't actually very helpful or nice when we asked questions etc. The friendliness didn't seem particularly genuine, there was none of the warmth and kindness of a real ryokan.
The onsen - 5 private (first in first served) and the public onsen, all outdoors - looked beautiful with their little gardens and wood and stone fit outs but every time we went into any of them, they smelled really strongly of chlorine. No natural hot spring should be smelling of chlorine. The smell actually made my partner feel quite sick. Then we were charged an onsen fee at check out unexpectedly. It didn't cost much but I feel there shouldn't be a hidden onsen fee when you're staying at an (expensive) onsen "resort". Also, it was charged per day, not per onsen visit, so even guests not using the onsen would have been charged.
The room was ok - a little bit old and worn around the edges but fine. But definitely not worth the price we paid. There was no wifi available anywhere in the hotel, just one computer in a corner for guests to use if they wanted, although I'm sure I read beforehand that wifi was available. We don't care too much about wifi, but since it was being run like a big hotel, it seemed strange that there wasn't any wifi, considering even the small guest houses we stayed in offered wifi.
We had been having Japanese style breakfast at every other place we stayed in Japan and enjoying it thoroughly but were not overly impressed with the Japanese breakfast here.
We found that while the location was great for access to the Arashiyama monkey park and the (Hankyu line) Arashiyama railway station (directly in front of the hotel) there were no restaurants in the area open at night. We walked for a long time trying to find a restaurant on our first night and couldn't find anything, and when we asked if we could eat at the hotel restaurant were told that you had to book for dinner upon check in and so we couldn't eat at the restaurant. We ate a lot of things from the convenience store across the street during our stay.
It took about 20 - 30 minutes (with transfers) to get to the centre of Kyoto/Gion. While it was fairly convenient and the railway was easy to use, it was that little bit inconvenient when we were cold and tired to go out for dinner in Kyoto at night and come home to the hotel afterwards. It would have been nice to have restaurants within walking distance.
Overall it was clean and tidy, staff were ok, the room was comfortable, but we were disappointed considering the price. Would definitely recommend finding a nicer traditional ryokan for your stay in Kyoto.
Moving on to incident #2: The hotel requires all guest to remove shoes and wear only socks on the property. I got a splinter on my foot from a chipped floor board during dinner. I called the waiter for assistance. After 10 minutes, the manager finally came with a tweezer and ointment and left. I had to call to waiter twice for a freaking bandage. The chipped floor piece went though my sock and cause a fairly deep splinter. I was very worried about infection since I had a 3 more days of walking tour. I complained to the manager but he didn't bother to cover the damage floor board or make a report for the incident. I took a picture of the damage floor in case of issue. Thank God I didn't get an infection. But good luck to the next guest since it doesn't seem like they intend to fix it.
Overall, we enjoyed the room, the private hot springs, and the location was prime. But the staffs can use some training on communication and standard procedure on handling incidents.
