We visited Kadensho Ryokan as a day trip from Kyoto, around 40 minutes away from our hotel in central Kyoto. We were able to book our reservation through our hotel's concierge. The cost was 8200 yen (taxes in) for two people for 3 hours, and it included using the private onsens (5 private baths available) with a hotel room for us to use. It was amazing! Unlimited drinks were included with the cost. The Ryokan is a short 2 minute walk from the transit station and the grounds looked lovely from what we could see. The front desk people did not speak a lot of english, but we managed just fine. They provided us with lockers for our shoes, and a map to show up where our room was, and then where the private baths were. We had full use of the hotel room, including shower, toilet and beds for a quick nap if needed. We quickly changed into the yukatas provided free of charge and headed to the onsen area. If the light was on outside the onsen room, then it was occupied; if the light was off, then it was free to use. Luckily, all lights were off, so we could take a quick look in each room to see which one we wanted to use. We chose an outdoor bath, and followed all the rules prior to getting in. It was GLORIOUS! the water was hot and steamy, and with the outside temperature so cold, it was lovely going back out and in. We debated going into a different onsen since they were all available, but just decided to stay in the bamboo onsen. Afterwards, we showered off, relaxed in the hotel room, helped ourselves to free hot and cold drinks, and then checked out. Tattoos are not an issue since it is a private bath. It was well worth the 8200 yen for 3 hours of bliss. Strongly recommend!!

I can't comment on the food or a full night's stay since this was a day trip. But for all those looking for a private onsen where tattoos are not an issue, and you only want to use the facilities, then this was an amazing option!

From Kyoto station to Arashiyama the ride was about 30” and the taxi cost was about 3300 yen. Split three ways we felt it was a deal.
We were greeted warmly by several staff members as soon as the taxi stopped. Then our luggage was whisked to the reception desk. Between the clerk who could speak a little English and out limited Japanese, the check-in process was quick and pleasant.
Our room decor was mainly Japanese with a calming effect but with western beds and bathroom. We took advantage of the room amenities; hot water, green tea, rice crackers.
The public onsen was very clean and neat. We bathed at 5:00 pm and we basically had the entire area to ourselves. We bathed again the next morning at 5:00 am and again had the entire bath to ourselves. The water temperature both times was perfect and the ambience of the public and private baths were incredible.
Our included meals, dinner and breakfast, were of excellent quality and very tasty. Dinner was served on trays with many small dishes arranged beautifully. Breakfast buffet offered both western and Japanese dishes.
Would I go back to the onsen? Yes definitely!!!

This ryokan is managed like a hotel as opposed to a boutique inn. Our room was unexpectedly small for a party of 3, although I must say that the private onsens were great. The availability of ice cream outside the onsen is a nice touch. Reception was ok, although going about bare foot all over /in the property takes getting used to. The dinner meal plan works more like an ala carte buffet vs a kaiseki. If you are looking for an affordable ryokan experience that is somewhat "mass", this could be a good introductory experience. But boutique experience it is not.

I stayed in many onsen rykoyan in Japan before but this one offered the worse service! The worst experience so far. We stayed in a family room with two western style beds and two Japanese style beds. Based on our experience, the staff will come in and make our Japanese beds while we were out for dinner. But to our surprise, the coffee table and chairs were still there when we were back. We called the front desk and the answer we got was, it was a simple task and they expect the client to do it themselves but if we need assistance, they will help. We did by ourselves at the end as we were not sure if this was the no there. But considering a night of stay dor USD1300, this is really not the quality of service to be expected. Not recommend for anyone. The staff were neither helpful nor friendly and the food were so so. It really doesn’t worth the money.

This is supposed to be a 4-star hotel, wondered where they get their stars from!

All guests have to keep their shoes in a cabinet on arrival and walk around the whole hotel bare footed! You would then assume everywhere should be in tip top condition but No. We found little crawling bugs on the room floor mat and bathroom shelves and floors are covered with a layer of dust! After walking around a while, your feet is dirty!

They try to clean your luggage wheels on arrival on a very small piece of rug and physics will tell you not the whole wheel is cleaned and there is not enough space on the rug for the wheel to turn a full round! Staff is just going through the motion!

All furnitures and Yukata clothings are old and worn out. This killed our desire to wear them and go to their onsen! How clean will be their onsen!

Japan is a very clean country and we have not encountered such a run down and dirty hotel! Never stay here again!

Where do I start when I was excited for this place while doing honeymoon here? Horrible.
It all started with bad instructions on the Google map and tried to contacted the staff here and got horrible engish help. We found our way They didn't even bother to come look for us and ended up just trying to get us checked in and thats all. The building is old and staff is unfriendly.
Gave us no option on the changing close in fact offered the ugliest for us to wear. And did I mention we are on the smoking floor? Yep. You are screwed if you are sensitive then too bad for you.
Well, this taught me never trust reviews again.

Pros:
1) Hotel location is nice. Right in front of Arashiyama station
2) Hotel has big public bath and 5 private baths. Free ice lollipops throughout the day, free ramen at night from 2230 to midnight
3) Thann shower gel and shampoo were provided which is nice

Cons:
1) this hotel has nice facilities and potentials but the main problem is the service and the staff. The receptionists and staff were rude to us and they did not care about solving our problems nor providing suggestions. (i.e. we added one more guest to our booking and it turned out the guest could stay in the room but no meal could be provided and the reason they provided was that there was not enough seats but we (3 ppl) had a table for 4 (!!) which we couldn't understand at all. The hotel was only willing to refund 3000 yen for not being able to provide the meal but we think it costed a lot more than 3000 yen? It turned out our friend had to eat at the cafeteria alone next to the hotel. All they said to us the whole time was just 'I don't know'.
2) We asked for cup delivered to our room but the staff again showed us he was impatient with his words and body language.
3) We got shouted out from the bar while we were chilling there
4) The quality of dinner and breakfast was not on the par compared to other ryokans I've been

All in all, this is one of the worst ryokan experience I've had (I've been quite a lot all over Japan) and I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. I believe you have a lot more better choices given the price you are willing to pay to stay at this hotel.

(2 staff were actually nice and I would like to give them credits: The old ramen chef at the night snack bar and a young (20yr old) lad who serves at the restaurant. Thank you for your warm smiles which was a bit of a comfort during the 2 days stay!

Location is very easy to access, 1 minute from Arashiyama station. Twin room is small, hotel also small, onsen baths had 1 common for each gender and 5 special private onsen - not by booking, you just go and check or wait, but I checked and find the private baths are not real mineral baths, a big disappointment. Whilst the dinner is known for its LAVISH, extravagant style, it is a great serving meal. Late night with free snacks, ample. Breakfast half serving and half buffet.

This hotel is about food, but if you prefer a holistic experience, please plan additional hours of travel to somewhere farther.

My partner and I stayed here for 3 nights and were not very impressed. It was my third visit to Japan (my partner's first). Kadensho is not a ryokan, it's run like a big hotel with some ryokan-like features such as tatami and yukata.

The staff appeared pleasant at first but weren't actually very helpful or nice when we asked questions etc. The friendliness didn't seem particularly genuine, there was none of the warmth and kindness of a real ryokan.

The onsen - 5 private (first in first served) and the public onsen, all outdoors - looked beautiful with their little gardens and wood and stone fit outs but every time we went into any of them, they smelled really strongly of chlorine. No natural hot spring should be smelling of chlorine. The smell actually made my partner feel quite sick. Then we were charged an onsen fee at check out unexpectedly. It didn't cost much but I feel there shouldn't be a hidden onsen fee when you're staying at an (expensive) onsen "resort". Also, it was charged per day, not per onsen visit, so even guests not using the onsen would have been charged.

The room was ok - a little bit old and worn around the edges but fine. But definitely not worth the price we paid. There was no wifi available anywhere in the hotel, just one computer in a corner for guests to use if they wanted, although I'm sure I read beforehand that wifi was available. We don't care too much about wifi, but since it was being run like a big hotel, it seemed strange that there wasn't any wifi, considering even the small guest houses we stayed in offered wifi.

We had been having Japanese style breakfast at every other place we stayed in Japan and enjoying it thoroughly but were not overly impressed with the Japanese breakfast here.

We found that while the location was great for access to the Arashiyama monkey park and the (Hankyu line) Arashiyama railway station (directly in front of the hotel) there were no restaurants in the area open at night. We walked for a long time trying to find a restaurant on our first night and couldn't find anything, and when we asked if we could eat at the hotel restaurant were told that you had to book for dinner upon check in and so we couldn't eat at the restaurant. We ate a lot of things from the convenience store across the street during our stay.

It took about 20 - 30 minutes (with transfers) to get to the centre of Kyoto/Gion. While it was fairly convenient and the railway was easy to use, it was that little bit inconvenient when we were cold and tired to go out for dinner in Kyoto at night and come home to the hotel afterwards. It would have been nice to have restaurants within walking distance.

Overall it was clean and tidy, staff were ok, the room was comfortable, but we were disappointed considering the price. Would definitely recommend finding a nicer traditional ryokan for your stay in Kyoto.

My husband and I chose this hotel to experience traditional Japanese style hot spring hotel. Upon check in, we found out the room was equipped with only stand in shower. It took the Front desk 15 minutes to understand that we needed bathroom with "Tub" option. She explained it would cost additional 6000 yen per person to upgrade which we were ok with it. After check in process, she gave us the key and I confirmed again that we are upgrading to room with tub. She looked at me confused. At this point, I gave up. (Front desk staffs need serious training on learning simple Hospitality terms in English! For example: bathtubs/Cot/Cribs, etc)

Moving on to incident #2: The hotel requires all guest to remove shoes and wear only socks on the property. I got a splinter on my foot from a chipped floor board during dinner. I called the waiter for assistance. After 10 minutes, the manager finally came with a tweezer and ointment and left. I had to call to waiter twice for a freaking bandage. The chipped floor piece went though my sock and cause a fairly deep splinter. I was very worried about infection since I had a 3 more days of walking tour. I complained to the manager but he didn't bother to cover the damage floor board or make a report for the incident. I took a picture of the damage floor in case of issue. Thank God I didn't get an infection. But good luck to the next guest since it doesn't seem like they intend to fix it.

Overall, we enjoyed the room, the private hot springs, and the location was prime. But the staffs can use some training on communication and standard procedure on handling incidents.

I don't believe you will be able to find breast pump accessory within walking distance of the hotel or Akashiyama. Even the convenient store next door sells only food and daily essentials only. If in Kyoto, you should be able to find the parts you need in any department stores's baby department. I was also breast feeding when we travelled with our little one who was less than two at the time. One thing we found is Japan is so baby and mother friendly that you can find nursing room available in any major pubic areas. Hope this helps.
