I just loved this place from the very first visit to the city. Inspite of some negative reviews of the place which are true infact I could not resist myself going there again and again. This is the kind of place tourist love go to different lands to see different cultures, intresting people.
Just stroll this place from end to end at a leisurly pace and reject any offers ranging from CDs porn watches and massage.
Actually after a few visits I enjoyed my self being scammed by the con artists there. If someone would approach me and stated a conversation I would indulge into it and talk a lot of nonsense. after consuming much of their time i would Say NO to the tea ceremony. Its hilarious.
Nice place for people watching and free street performances.

I took the subway to People's Square and started walking towards the Bund through Nanjing Road. I really liked the walk because it was night time and the bright lights and the atmosphere made me feel wonderful about being a tourist. But suddenly I was constantly harassed by more than 30-or-so hustlers.
I did not want to buy a fake watch or a fake bag or to get a massage or to sleep with a prostitute. I just wanted to enjoy my walk in the city. But saying "No" in Chinese and in English was not an option. They would not leave you alone especially if you are a foreigner.
I dont know the law in Shanghai allows this or I dont know if the authorities are not willing to do anything about them but they must do something.

But regardless, I enjoyed my walk to the bund.

Unless you are determined to spend money in the high end overpriced shops here I would recommend you give it a miss. If you need to get from one end to the other to reach the Bund then take the electric train, for only 5RMB you will avoid the hustlers here. I walked from Peoples Square to the Bund and was stopped 38 times. Each time was the same, Did I want a watch, a Gucci bag, a lady or some dope. I know Shanghai probably has the largest concentration of foreign tourists in China and most of them will walk down this street but I found this extremely annoying and by the time I arrived at the Bund my good mood had evaporated. Avoid wherever possible.

This is one of the greatest shopping meccas anywhere in the world. It is a lot of fun at night. The crowds are huge however, and it is not the place to go for bargains!

If you really like shopping in malls then it's fine but it's just really busy and there isn't anything you won't be able to buy elsewhere cheaper. As has been said loads of approaches re watches and bags and we generally found the shops more expensive than say Yu Garden Bazaar where I bought a scarf for 169 yuan that the shops on this road wanted up to 1400 yuan for and even fixed price shop 949 yuan.
Be careful in Shanghai No 1 Food Hall if you want to use a credit card. As is usual we made a number of purchases and were given tickets to take to the 4th floor to the conceierge desk to pay before returning for our goods, which I dutifully did. The staff didn't have a clue and despite me repeatedly saying I wanted the transactions to go through in yuan they converted to £s and loaded the cost by over 10%. When I entered my pin it was in yuan but the slip was in £s - I refused to sign the slip saying I hadn't been offered a choice as it stated and rather a battle ensued. I said no problem just refund this and I'll go to the ATM and pay in cash but they didn't know how to process the refund after 2 managers and a wasted hour with me only ever saying I was worried and upset and it was poor service they called security and were going to remove me from the store without my refund or my goods. By sheer luck they finally managed to process my refund and said yes they knew their staff needed trained!
