Zoo TV represents U2 at their most ambitious. The multimedia event combines two stages with live music, pre-recorded tracks, and 36 screens flashing an array of words and images. (Video artists include Kevin Godley, Anton Corbijn, and Brian Eno.) The theatricality extends to the quartet themselves, since Bono, as "The Fly," enters the scene in black patent leather--shades of '68 Elvis--while Adam Clayton sports a platinum mohawk. In order to recreate the experience for the home viewer, slogans are superimposed over footage from this 1993 engagement, e.g. "question everything," "this is not a rehearsal," etc. As Bono quips, "The latest and greatest in software, hardware, and menswear--we've got it all here." With so much going on, the most dynamic material tends to work best, like "The Real Thing," "Bullet the Blue Sky," and "Mysterious Ways," complete with belly dancer (in keeping with the song's Moroccan-set video). The foursome also tackles a few covers, like Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love" and Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love." Towards the end of the latter, Reed appears via video monitor to sing along. Arguably, the whole Mister MacPhisto thing--Bono as satanic lounge lizard---doesn't quite work, but U2 deserves props for taking chances when most bands in their position would be resting on their laurels. With the accent on material from Achtung Baby and Zooropa,Zoo TV: Live From Sydney first appeared on VHS in 1994 and garnered a Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

This is unquestionably the best live U2 on DVD, though "U2 Go Home -- Live from Sloane Castle" is also essential. The Zoo TV extravaganza was unprecedented in its scale and complexity, but what's amazing about this show is that the staging always complements the music, and never overwhelms it. The media-overload setup is absolutely dazzling, and it's imaginatively deployed throughout, but the emphasis is always on the four men at the heart of this great band. I bought this concert on VHS, found it later on a pirate VCD in Mexico, and am delighted to see it finally on DVD. Highlights include a "Mysterious Ways" for the ages (featuring fantastically passionate singing by Bono, and Morleigh Steinberg in a belly-dancer cameo -- she's the woman who would later become Edge's wife); a titanic "Until the End of the World" (aggressive and dangerous-seeming, in a way that U2 music rarely is); "Stay," "Bullet the Blue Sky," "Daddy's Gonna Pay ..." The rapturous Sydney crowd laps it all up and screams for more, and who wouldn't? This is an unmissable document of perhaps the most mind-bending rock-'n'-roll tour of all time.

This is probably the best U2 concert DVD out there. Music is great, the show is awesome, the audience and the venue are tremendous. This is U2 at the top of their game, and Bono's theatrics are extraordinary. Given the fact that U2 has done many tours, I wish there were more U2 concert DVDs (Boston Live concert DVD is just PAL region and doesn't even play in North American players). If you are a U2 fan or simply a fan of the extravagant rock concert shows in large stadiums, you should definitely get this.

HIGHLIGHTS:
----The beginning and the entrance for "Zoo Station." Coolest couple of minutes in the world the first time you see it. Bono all in the Fly persona and the way they handle it. You'll love it the first time you see it.
----I like the acoustic performance of "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)" But I'm wierd like that, I guess.
----I LOVE the way both "Bullet The Blue Sky" and "Running To Stand Still" are performed. Rumor has it that Bono thought that this would be U2's final show, so he wanted to go out in a bang, apparently, because those two performances are simply amazing, especially the performance to "Running To Stand Still."
----I gotta talk about the encore's -- Mr. MacPhisto. I had never seen Mr. MacPhisto before...and my jaw dropped to the ground the first time I saw it. It proves the creativity of U2, and it really made what would've been otherwise bland (with the exception of With or Without You) encore's mean something.

Aside from the creative peak U2 were at then (Achtung Baby & Zooropa were their released albums during the ZooTV tour) IMHO, the amazing stage/video was an enhancement to the band's performance. And this DVD is a great documentary to the finale of the band's two year world tour. Not to take away from the music, which should be the main reason someone buys a concert film, which is great for any fan of U2, but this DVD captures the band firing on all cylinders. Compared to their current 360 Tour, where the giant spaceship like stage dwarfs the guys, the ZooTV interactive banter and the metaphor for the public's addiction to TV is just as relevant today as it was back in '93 (if you don't see it on TV, it must not be true). If you like U2 this is a must have!

Yes, this dvd captures the band at their best. The Auchtung Baby/Zooropa period was their finest and most creative. Sadly, they have become celebrities since and their music has become conservative and bland. Sorry Bono!

You will be thrilled and amazed by the creative genious that is U2 Inc. They worked with talented folks who built this monster set around the stage. It's like a three ring circus (not to be confused with that awful Rolling Stones Circus). No, this will blow your mind.

The songs are great and reflect tremendous growth since Joshua Tree. And then they perform the songs in new ways. I have seen most of their tours from War on and this one is their finest. Sit back and tune into Zoo TV!

This one was really a great concert and the DVD is finally here!!!!!!! I wish U2 would put all their concerts on DVD. Good or not so great, its great for a fan to have just because!!!!!. I would say BUY it, if you dont have it or didnt see it in person. You can never have enough U2 concerts and watching this gives you a better insight as to why they do what they do and how they do it. Great performances by all four, and the audience really helps this DVD come to life.

U2 in 1991 when they toured this show in support of Actung Baby, there greatest album ever, were at there peak. This dvd captures what this band could truly be. Tight show, most of there hit songs, great stage set-up and most gratifying was very little "Billy Graham" Bono. He kept the show moving, sang great, and did what all great rockers do....performed a great rock show ONLY no hidden agenda and left us wanting for more

I've seen every U2 concert DVD released and this is by far my favorite. The band is in top form performing hits from their two BEST albums(Acthung Baby and The Joshua Tree) as well as songs they don't perform live anymore(Lemon, Dirty Day). The Zoo Tv tour was one of the most ground breaking tours ever and this DVD is a great example of the true greatness of that tour. I highly recommend this for any U2 fan and even nonfans(this DVD could change your mind).

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Concert I ever saw

The Zoo TV tour was the best tour (by any band)that i have seen. I was lucky enough to catch the show three times. It was like seeing the Rolling Stones in '72 or Led Zeppelin in the mid '70's. Basiclly seeing the biggest and best band in the world at their peek. I can still remember me and my freinds sitting around one night after work and watching this show as a pay per veiw (don't worry the sound is one hundred times better then that broadcast- at the time of the PPV someone broadcasted the audio with dolby noise reduction and it made the sound muddy. BUT not here). The Video has been greatly improved as well and there was nothing wrong with it to begin with. The 5.1 mix is amazing in both Dolby Dig. and DTS. Best of all is Bono's at the top of his game in stage craft and voice. In the past few years Bono has had trouble with his voice but once again. That's not the case here.
Song highlites include an amazing version of "Bullet The Blue Sky" (Edge's guitar solo is not only one of his best but one of the best that i have ever heard) that run's into haunting version of "Running To Stand Still". Plus many others ("One", "Where The Streets Have No Name" are all great) Basiclly if you like U2 this is as good as it gets.
