Joseph J. Sieman, 1942-2024

Joe was born Dec. 17, 1942, in Brownsville, Pa., a son of Louis and Helen Yanatchko Sieman.

A 1960 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Joe attended Youngstown Business College for one year before enlisting in the United States Navy. He proudly served for four years on the USS Intrepid, which was used as the primary recovery vessel for the astronauts on NASA’s first piloted Gemini mission.

After being honorably discharged, he returned to the Youngstown area and served as an electrician’s apprentice with Republic Steel. Joe then worked many years as a machinist for United Engineering / Wean United, until their closing, and concluded his working career as a custodian for SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church.

Joe was well-read, loved history, had the mind of a mechanic, inventor and engineer, and was always eager to share his ideas. He will be lovingly remembered for his kindness, thoughtfulness, his ease of making conversation with everyone he met and keen ability to never forget a face or name.

Joe is survived by his sons, Richard L. (Rachel) Sieman of Boardman and Dr. Robert J. (Wendy) Sieman of New Providence, New Jersey; eight grandchildren, Capt. Robert (Kamiren) Sieman of Boardman, Alexander Sieman of Columbus, Dr. Katherine (Alex) Lebedev of Mason, Gwendolyn Sieman of Columbus, Daniel Sieman, Lindsey Sieman, Matthew Sieman and Luke Sieman, all of New Providence; three great-grandchildren, Reagan Sieman, Natalie Sieman and Rose Lebedev; sister, Janice (Andy) Poole of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and sister-in-law, Tina Sieman of Phoenix, Arizona.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his brother, Richard L. Sieman.

Family and friends will be received 4 to 5:45 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2024, at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St., Boardman, where a funeral service will follow at 6 p.m. Interment will be private on Saturday in Lake Park Cemetery.
