Same issue, but to clarify mine - I think Windows Live Mail is working as intended in my case, but not how I want it to. I have connectivity issues with my email server on occasion - and different mail programs on different computers will have issues getting in. Windows Live Mail keeps prompting over and over for the password - I want it just get on with the job and not ask - the password hasn't changed!

There are two ways to enter your password, you can store it permanently in Windows Live Mail (WLM), as recommended; or you can type it in manually every time you start the WLM program.

Do it this way -

1. Right-click on the account name in WLM, in the left-hand pane, e.g. xxxxxx @hotmail.com

   ** RIGHT-CLICK ON THE ACCOUNT NAME - DO NOT RIGHT-CLICK ON A SUB-FOLDER **

2. Click on Properties

3. Click on the Servers tab

4. Type your Account name in the box, and your password in the password box.

5. Tick the box Remember password

6. Click on Apply

If there is already a password in the box, get rid of it before doing the 6 steps above, because the error you're getting suggests it must currently be wrong:

1. Delete the existing password so that the box is empty.

2. Tick the box Remember password

3. Click on Apply

4. Close WLM, wait 1 minute, then re-start it.

5. Go through steps 1 to 6, in the first list above.

No, not the issue.

The password that is saved, and has been for possibly 5 years now has not changed. My problem is not an incorrect password, it is an issue at the other end. So what is my problem with live mail? - that it keeps asking to re-affirm the existing password, which without changing (eventually) works - I simply want WLM to stop asking and keep trying the (correct) password it currently has, rather than putting a pop up requiring a click to try again.  The problem has popped up now and again over the years, it's just the way WLM deals with it that annoys. Note that other email programs on other PC's sometimes have issues logging on, but don't keep asking over and over.

I'm sorry Tetrol, I was answering Donna's question. As far as Donna's concerned, I'm sure I'm right. I've been there, so to speak!

@Tetrol -  To stop the program from continuously prompting you, if you saved your password using the six steps I specified, above, the program should resubmit the password for you, automatically, if you also right-click on the account name, then select 'Properties', then click on 'Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing', then click 'Apply'.

Sorry - got an email without Donna's message as if answer was to me - yes, if the stored password is wrong, yes correct answer.

Donna's situation is different, of course: she is completely locked-out. She couldn't send or receive at all.

But what I want you to tell me is, do you currently have 'Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing' ticked/checked?

If not, does activating that option help you to connect?

When the program is unable to send or receive, it will almost always display an error message explaining what went wrong. Remove any unsent messages from the outbox (below the account folders in the folder pane), then compose a new test message with a unique subject and send it to yourself (i.e. from the account that's misbehaving to the same account). Post any error messages in your reply. You can click on an error message to select it, then use right-click to copy it and paste it into the text entry box.

When you reply, please give your build of the program and your version of Windows.

  • To find your program version and build, in Windows Live Mail press Alt-F B.

  • To find your operating system, press Windows key + R, type winver into the box and press Enter.

I really think I am being misunderstood as to my problem.

I acknowledge I have problems connecting to my email server.

With any of a number of programs - not just Windows Live Mail

All have the same problem - the server occasionally decides my saved password is incorrect - same problem with any of those programs.

However - only Windows Live Mail has a hissy fit and throws it back at me asking to re-confirm the password, I hit enter, accepting the SAME password 10 times and suddenly it accepts it and downloads the emails. The other programs simply retry - without annoying me -  until they get through - or not

Ironically, your notification email from microsoft took about 10 clicks on "accept" to get through tonight

 - the server occasionally decides my saved password is incorrect -

Windows Live Mail submits your credentials to the mail server. The server sends a response - either success or failure to authenticate you. If the return code is success, the transaction goes ahead, but if it's fail (ERR for a POP3 account), Windows Live Mail will ask you to re-enter your credentials in case that's the problem. In any case of failure, the program will deliver an error message explaining (cryptically) what's wrong. There are any number of reasons why the connection might fail, only one of which is 'wrong password.' Examine the error message to get an idea of what went wrong.

For example, some mail servers lock a POP3 mailbox for a period after a successful transaction, to limit traffic to the server. If you attempt to connect again during this period, the connection will fail, often with an inadequate response. The cure in these cases is to increase the time between polls for new messages, up to say 30 minutes. This might explain why the tenth attempt is successful after nine failures.

It goes on. Thanks for the explanation but it not explaining the level of my problem. I accept that problem exists, my problem lies with WLM's manner of addressing it. Asking for re-confirmation every 10 seconds by an intrusive pop-up is the issue. I can cope with not connecting, I know in 5 or 10 minutes it will connect, I just want WLM to quietly go about its business in the background and not ask for help every 10 seconds.
