James Hague Obituary

Long-time and renowned chronicler of N.J. interscholastic
athletics was a major sportswriting figure in Hudson County, 62
James F. Hague, age 62, slipped away from this life into eternal rest on June 11, 2023. A native son of Jersey City, Jim was a beloved chronicler of recreational and scholastic sports and wrote for every major daily in northern New Jersey. After decades of press boxes, sidelines, professional egos, and big arena locker rooms, the local stories about high school boys and girls brought him untold joy. He wrote with a passion and focused on the athletes, watching them excel on and off the field.
Jim Horan, of St Peter's Prep and his Prep 1979 journalism teacher shared:
"Very few graduates of Saint Peter's have been as passionately proud of their Prep diploma as Jim was, and through both his infectious personality and his prolific sports writing career he was both well known and admired by fellow alumni of many generations. As we all know, Jim 'lived' in the world of sports, and he was as enthusiastic about a local freshman team's winning season as he was about a stunning state championship game at MetLife Stadium. That said, especially in Hudson County, he was both a pundit and an everyman, seemingly always on the scene and quickly churning out compelling copy. His passing is not only a loss for Saint Peter's Prep, but also for Hudson County's many athletes who have lost their most reliable chronicler."
Jim was predeceased by his parents, John and Helaine Hague, sister, Jayne, brother, Jack, nephew, John, and brothers-in-law, Brian and James "Jay" Costello.
Jim is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Mary K. Costello; nieces, Jacqueline Hague, Kate Olivieri, Maura Olivieri (Rob Saxelby), Coleen Kaney (John) and their children, Fiona and Luca; nephews, Jonathan Hague-Perez, Patrick Olivieri (Julia Standish), Ian Olivieri, Jason Costello (Alison) and their children, Juliet and Alex, Michael Costello, Kevin Crowe (Tara) and their daughter, Evelyn, and great-nephews, Johnny Hague and Danny Hague and Mason and William; sisters-in-law, Kathleen Hague, Eileen Crowe-Costello, Patricia K. Costello and brother-in-law, Thomas P. Olivieri.
The wake will be held at Saint Peter's Prep's O'Keefe Commons, 236 Van Vorst St., Jersey City, on Wednesday, from 3:00pm to 7:00pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Paul of the Apostle Church Thursday, June 15, 2023 at 10:30am.

I am deeply saddened to learn about the passing of one of Jersey City's Gentle Giants, Jim Hague. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family during this difficult time. Jim's writings were a testament to his encyclopedic knowledge of both local and national sports. He would often hold court at the Park Tavern, generously sharing his wisdom and passion for sports with everyone around him.
Jim's presence and the wealth of knowledge he brought to conversations will be greatly missed. May he find eternal peace and rest easily, knowing that his contributions to the world of sports will be remembered and cherished. Farewell, my friend.

I'm sorry my friend that God had a different plan in mind for you. When we spoke on your birthday and the thought of being in a wheel-chair when you left the hospital wasn't the Jim Hague we all knew and had grown to love and admire, maybe God knew what was best. I'm sure Fr. A is looking after you now because you were very special to him. Rest in peace my friend and thanks for always making me feel special. God Bless You.

RIP to an honorable man with a sense of humor that was second to none. The Altieri family is forever grateful for how Jim Hague respected my dad when he passed many years ago. Simply put, there are somethings in life that will NEVER be forgotten ... Jim Hague's memory is eternal due to his actions. Godspeed to all of Jim's close friends and family.
