Meanings and origins of all the Arknights Operator names!

Pramana (Sanskrit: प्रमाण, Pramāṇa) literally means "proof" and "means of knowledge", and "-ix" is the suffix for female. The combination of the two roughly corresponds to the identity of the Saintess.Another option would be a failed latinization of her name in kanji 初雪: 初 : first -> Prima (latin) 雪 : snow -> Nix (latin) 初雪 : First Snow -> Primanix
Projekt Red Either her designers changed the “c” in project to a “k” to reference her purpose, namely to kill (just like Mortal ‘K’ombat). Or this is a reference to the polish game studio of the same name, and their most well-known character, Geralt of Rivia. They’re both described as wolfs and hunters and were specifically engineered for their purpose. In any case the “Red” refers to Little Red Riding Hood, a European fairy tale, that is referenced in much of her archive and voice lines.

A huge thanks to everyone in this and this thread, as well as this and this thread and also to u/HaoXLee!
And of course an immense thank you to everyone who contributed to this post in the comments!
TREBUCHET MASTER RACE!!!!!
I chuckled when I read that. Of course that meme is still alive.
Gamepress has a lore entry on Ayerscarpe, which explains his name.
Thank you! I've added it.
Click codename is a pun
She's a mouse, mouse click. Ha! Get it!?
She also likes doing photo/video shoots, and you can guess what sound cameras make when taking a picture.
Added, thank you! I don't know how I missed that...
Folinic is a reference to folinic acid, which Folinic herself had trouble remembering during her studies.
she is so chill and lazy at times i forgot she was an angel
I think Folinic references Folinic Acid, a drug used in chemotherapy. She is a medic.
And Podenco is a dog breed that is perhaps her model.
THRM-EX : THERMAL EXPLOSIONNNN!!
Castle-3: Dude's shaped like a castle. . .
Utage means party. Perhaps referencing how she is kinda a party girl?
Leonhardt, I think, references Richard the Lionheart basically the MC of the Third Crusade. Though I found no link to the story. . .
Thank you for all this! Added.
I looked up some more, too. I think Tsukinogi is not a single word, instead Tsuki-no-Gi.
Tsuki means moon, no is a linkage (of the, basically), and Gi have many meanings, among them (which IMO the most fitting) are:
Clothing
Honor/Justice
Ceremony
So she can mean Ceremony of the Moon, Justice of the Moon, or Clothing of the Moon.
Actually, compared to her Chinese name 月禾, her English name should be separated as Tsuki-nogi. 禾 pronounces as nogi in Japanese. It means grain product both in Japanese and Chinese.
Not sure what does it mean by combining moon and grains together as her name. Probably due to her identity as a former candidate of a Miko, she has to pray to the moon for a good harvest.
Ooh makes sense.
I forgot that this game is Chinese and not Japanese.
Thanks again!
Chiave is one way of calling the wrench.
Added, thank you!
Durin is reference of a dwarf king of Khazad Dum in Tolkein lore.
Fang has nothing to do with animal fangs. It's a mis-romanization, the correct one should be Fen/Feng. She also doesn't pronounce her japanese name as "ban-gu/fang".
Thanks for the info!
I think for Reed it's because she referenced it to the reeds around the pond, and thinks they're useless. Poor Reed
Oh man, I didn't want to believe it, but it's true. Such a good girl, and so sad.
ShawerasesCrownslayer! ᕦ( °▽°
Poor Crownslayer :(
IMHO, I see more Pramanix as a failed latinization of her name in kanji 初雪
初 : first -> Prima (latin)
雪 : snow -> Nix (latin)
初雪 : First Snow -> Primanix
Ceobe's attack doesn't hit 3 targets - but she brings 3 different kinds of weapons, which I assume is what the reference is.
Thanks for catching that! Sometimes my english fails me.
No problem, I know what that's like. Good list in any case!
head could also means weapon.
Love it! Thanks for spending the time to write this
Pretty sure Ch'en is named after the dragon of Chinese legend. I remember accidentally coming across info about it when in a Wikipedia rabbit hole adventure
EDIT: Think I found it, it's an alternate spelling of Shen, a water dragon. Might be why her dragon is blue https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shen_%28clam-monster%29?wprov=sfla1
For Amiya, the name is well picked, it actually come from Hebrew "àmijah", which means "my mother is Jah" Aka "my mother is Jéhovah".
It Litteraly makes Amyia a pseudo-Messiah.
It is also corroborated by Rim Billington position, which would be around where a "near east" is located.
As for Messianic Amyia, it makes sense on several point, being the "lord announced by the prophecy".
Also small nitpick but while Bagpipe are associated with Scotland, they do not come from Scotland and have just been adopted by Scottish people.
What's the basis for Shining's name referencing the movie? She literally has a glowing power.
W in many countries is used as "double." She's a double agent. it's much more basic than the gun background.
The phoneticisation is chosen to transcribe the title of the movie The Shining. As with many Chinese phoneticisations, characters are deliberately also considered for meaning - here, "to flash/shine (a light)" and "(supernatural) spirit".
Thanks. It seems weird since she doesn't really have any themes of insanity or horror like the movie. Only the supernatural part from the title of the film
Sesa is the name of a naga king in Indian Hinduism. Source & more info on his name
Thanks for linking my rambling here ^^
Thanks for gathering all this information and sharing them! I love reading your posts on twitter ^^
You're welcome and glad to know you've been following my Twitter~
Thank you for this!
I want sesa even more now
Ahem, as a Swede, it's very important for me to point out that the largest part of the area historically referred to as Lappland is in Sweden: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%A1pmi
Also, considering that Finland used to be a part of Sweden, referring to the Finlandic side of Lappland as the original one feels a bit misleading: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lapland_(Sweden)
;)
EDIT:
Also, my guess would be that it actually refers to Thermal Expansion, the underlying physical process that governs explosions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_expansion
(There really isn't a concept actually referred to as a thermal explosion within physics.)
Lappland is named after Labrador. As in the extinct Newfoundland wolf.
Waai Fu is not a pun, the Chinese is Huai Hu.
Leonhardt is one, though, as in Lionhead Rabbit.
Additional trivia about W: the part that distinguishes a Mk 18 from a regular M4 is called Close Quarters Battle Receiver, or CQBR. The Arknights' game files refer W as CQBW. Presumably the developers thought her gun was called Close Quarters Battle Weapon back when she was being considered for GFL, and it carried over to her Arknights incarnation.
Are you sure its not close quarter bomber woman instead?
That would be a cool name for a Bomber man sequel.
Cutter's sword looks like box cutter blades.
Thanks you! Now that I've seen it I can't think of anything else.
May because she born on 1 may
Thank you!
Broca and Chiave are the name of tools in Latin languages.
Broca is a drill in Portuguese, while Chiave means key in Italian, which is also used for "wrench".
So basically we have drill and wrench.
Thank you! I had no idea!
Nice work with the upkeep, OP. It's very nice to see how big the list has grown. And it's also pretty dang cool to see you include/reference the other lists when you very well didn't have to.
also extra:
You're right that it is indeed named after Mastema (a fallen angel). Though some stories claim he's not fallen and still an angel but is the one that 'tests' mankind and punishes them - hence he is often seen more on the 'evil' side. I like to think that as it could be why Mostima in-game is not a Sarkaz but does have a black halo.
That's interesting. I thought her codename was more direct (like savage) as in, to lay siege to something - esp with her 3rd skill.
After the Magellanic penguin and after Ferdinand Magellan, a famed Portuguese explorer (the penguin themselves are also named after the explorer).
Oh my god I missed Magellan!
Magallan*

Hey u/GenderNeutralBot
I want to let you know that you are being very obnoxious and everyone is annoyed by your presence.
I am a bot. Downvotes won't remove this comment. If you want more information on gender-neutral language, just know that nobody associates the "corrected" language with sexism.
People who get offended by the pettiest things will only alienate themselves.
Reed's is apparently because she considers herself nondescript; unimportant like the reeds around a pond. Girl really needs a hug.
Ch'en does seem to be pretty much just using her family name like Silverash, as her full name is apparently Ch'en Hui-Chieh.
Gummy's name is perhaps also a reference to the former USSR's state department store GUM, which in Russian is Главный универсальный магази.
Gummy's Russian name is Гум, which is the abbreviation of the Russian name. Perhaps referencing her being the munitions supplier.
The codename of Leizi in CN is called Jīngzhé( 惊蛰 ), one of the 24 solar terms in the traditional East Asian calendar, which means "the first thunderstorm in the year will wake up hibernating insects ". Jingzhe - Wikipedia
Also, Leizi in EN refers to the "Mother of Lightning", which is the Chinese goddess of lightning. Dianmu - Wikipedia
Awesome work putting that all together OP! It was a fun read.
Edit: Also Kudos to all the contributors.
Earthspirit - Her fascination with soil and rocks.
"According to Earthspirit, studying the soil composition of samples from different eras will help us better understand the history of the land."
However, let's also look at her E2 art.
You say she's a goat, I say the thing inside her staff (that is talking to her) is akin to Baphomet, a devil with a goat's head. So, you can probably play with the words and end up with:
Earth Spirit = Spirit of the Earth = Spirit that dwells underground = the (a) devil
This would also explain how she can "hear" rocks, as the thing inside her staff is of the earth.
Lava is also molten rock that has been expelled from a terrestrial planet and she uses fire arts.
Podenco is a kind of dog.
Snowsant: Her codename is a reference to the Chinese name of white eared pheasant (Crossoptilon crossoptilon), "snow pheasant".
Vermeil is, according to her archives, named after the settlement Vermeil which produced the cloak she's wearing. Also Vermeil in jewelry means silver gilded with gold which may be a reference to how she is a blonde snow wolf?
Kroos is a German soccer player. :P (The soccer player's name comes probably from Middle Low German meaning jug, pitcher, tankard, but that doesn't really fit Kroos?)
Warren hound
Warren Hound refers to the group of Mediterranean rabbit-hunting dogs. In Spanish, this kind of breeds are called podencos and in Portuguese, podengos. Generally speaking, a warren hound has erect ears, a smooth (or in some cases, wire) coat, a slender body, and a whip-like tail. However, there are some exceptions: for instance, the Cretan Hound has usually rose-ears and a curly or curved tail, while the Barrocal Algarvio is long-haired, and the Podenco Paternero and some Campaneros have a robust, almost Mastiff-like body.

Most of the 3 star units names are pretty simple so kross could be because she uses a kross-bow
That sounds too funny to be true, but then again Cardigan and Beagle exist...
If those 2 weren't there i would have dismissed my idea as being too simple....but they exist
I don’t think so on Kroos, she used to use a revolver in the beta and pre-release screenshots. You can still see a left over of that from her skill icon (revolver chamber).
My guess her name is probably just a normal name (Cruise like in Tom Cruise) that didn’t make it through the translation to CN and back very well. The voice lines also match up with this a bit.
Waai Fu means bad tiger in cantonese! not sure why she's bad but since Lungmen predominant language is cantonese, that should be the origin of her name
Given Popukar's history as a lumberjack and her chainsaw, I think her name might have some connection with Populus, or Poplar trees.
Although she's not playable, Closure's codename and true name has a lot to do with computer science.
Ada "Closure" Church
Ada Lovelace, pioneer of computer science (ALSO THE DAUGHTER OF LORD BYRON LIKE HOLY COW)
Closure - a programming concept of data scope (poorly explained by me, perhaps someone better versed can explain it)
Alonzo Church - inventor of Lambda Calculus and the Church-Turing Thesis.
Fang: heard that her name is mistranslation of her CN name which is closer in sound to 'Feng'
THRM-EX: there's an actual corporation in Dallas, TX named Thermex Energy Corp. and they produces many stuffs including explosives under Thermex brand.
SilverAsh references a Chinese band of the same name. The band's name is 银色灰尘, and his CN name is shortened from it, 银灰.
There's a decent enough chance Myrtle is a reference to Aphrodite.
In Greek mythology and ritual the myrtle was sacred to the goddesses Aphrodite and also Demeter.
Myrtle possesses an Golden Apple. Golden apple featured in Trojan War Fable. 3 goddess feud over it and in the end it was awarded to Aphrodite, leading to the Trojan War.
I have no idea where the devs are going with this. Myrtle art also features a butterfly and I don't think there's a tie to Aphrodite there, so I might be wrong.
Chen is 陈 while Jackie Chan is 成龙. I'd say they are not related in any aspect.....
Jackie Chan's original surname is Chen
"a kroos-bow"
Thanks, Saria.
Dur-Nar's contract text is the hint that her name is actually a combination of Durable and Thunder. On account of her weapons be electrified, and one of them being a shield.
Vermeil also refers to a red/scarlet dye made from worms (vermin), and her Chinese name is basically "scarlet". "Vermeil" only came to mean "silver-gilding" in America for unknown reasons likely relating to Americans not understanding French.
I'm told that "Utage" specifically refers to a feast rather than parties in general. She's not just a party girl, she's also a predator and killer.

To add to this, he talks about Cautus being discriminated as cowardly when in fact escaping danger is something that brave people experience – so it might be a bonus that lion-heart means brave.
Yato is "night blade", 夜刀, as in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yato-no-kami. Commonly comes up as an edgy name in Japanese visual culture, but makes sense for this operator because she canonically has some form of photosensitivity and carries a blade.
The "waifu" similarity is probably an accident. It's the Cantonese reading of 槐琥 huai2 hu3, where hu3 means "amber" (the orange(!) gemstone) and is a homophone and near-homograph of 虎 (tiger). She's a tiger. The first character is a plant, glossed in English as a "Chinese scholar tree". I'm not sure why it's called that or if there may be some scholarly implication to the plant in the original Chinese.
Her internal name in datamines is "cqbw", and rumour on the street is that she was originally designed as a Girls' Frontline character. So W=Weapon?
Greek "black flower", maybe in reference to her black colour scheme and stereotypically feminine appearance/demeanor.
Is the common Chinese name in the Chinese script. Reference to Jackie Chan unlikely, because it's "Smith" levels of common. (Upcoming operator Jackie, on the other hand...) The name has a somewhat Southeast-heavy distribution, fitting with the HK/Guangdong theme of Lungmen.
(Not entirely serious) Franka Potente, a famous German redhead actress?
Thermite grenades?
Considering her Egyptian theme, probably a reference to the ample uses of the material in Ancient Egypt.
The meaning is less "party" and more "banquet" or "feast". Like ancient warlords having mead with their trusted companions, not like millennials raving at Burning Man.
I've been wondering if it's not meant to be Basilisk + arm(s). CN name is 雷蛇 (thunder snake), and the -lisk part of Basilisk wrongly got associated with snakes and dragons in fantasy culture (cf. Starcraft Hydralisks etc.). She's a Vouivre (Wyvern, two-legged dragon) with a gun.
Waai Fu
Waifu
Nice.
Vermeil may also be a reference to Dick Vermeil, a former NFL head coach. In her files, Vermeil is noted to have had a rough start in life, followed by a revenge tour in which she “abandoned her name,” followed by her relative prosperity at Rhodes Island. Dick Vermeil’s coaching career began with ups and downs in Philadelphia, followed by a 15-year period in which he abandoned his career as a coach, followed by a Super Bowl victory in St. Louis with the Rams. Vermeil also wears two rings on her ear, referencing Dick Vermeil’s Super Bowl ring and his induction into the St. Louis Football “Ring” of Honor. Vermeil’s combat experience is listed as 2 years, the same amount of time Dick Vermeil spent as an NCAA head coach before entering the NFL head coaching scene.
This is by far the weirdest comment I’ve ever posted.
broca means drill in portuguese
