      Critics Consensus

It doesn't quite live up to its intriguing premise, but Monsters is a surprising blend of alien-invasion tropes, political themes, and relationship drama.

Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review Arturs L Wonderful sci-fi adventure with fantastic couple - Able and McNairy in lead roles. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review Leaburn O Why the hate for this film? Didn't really feel the chemistry between the leads and the ending was a shame but 95% of the time I was entertained, intrigued and occasionally on edge. Well made. Watched on freeve. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/02/24 Full Review Cinephemeride [ what a lovely surprise this film is! Gareth Edwards offers us a fine and delicate work of science fiction that hides something completely different Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/11/23 Full Review Calvin T It was a solid movie 🎬.....I can't complain Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/26/23 Full Review Alain M premise looked cool, but the movie is pretty boring and long long dialogues with no point, the story just isn't moving along Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Deborah Ross The Spectator A special, wonderfully atmospheric achievement. Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Peter Howell Toronto Star A better-than-average debut by a filmmaker who merits watching. Let's hope that he keeps some of his indie spirit when Hollywood comes calling. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 4, 2011 Full Review Nick Roddick Sight & Sound An astonishing achievement for first-time British feature director Gareth Edwards. Apr 4, 2011 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Edwards’ direction holds promise, and should major Hollywood studios be searching for fresh unknown talent to helm their next big project, Edwards should be their man. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 3, 2023 Full Review Jennifer Bisset CNET Edwards' mastery of atmosphere, wonder and beauty is on show here, all on a shoestring budget. Mar 21, 2023 Full Review James McMahon NME (New Musical Express) There are few films I've enjoyed as much as Monsters this year. There are even fewer films I wish I hadn't watched so I could watch them fresh from the beginning again. Rated: 4/5 May 25, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews
