A poor introduction
Emma-M-V16 July 2017
This summary is lacking in both crucial information (ex: we never even get to know who the Greyjoy house really are beyond some short mentions) and in emotional power. They intersperse incredibly short clips of footage from the show with comments from not only the actors in the scene and George R.R Martin, which are fitting, but also actors with smaller roles unrelated to the footage and random journalists (Why, BBC? Why?) That and the common narrator voice used causes the summary to seem choppy, cheap and unable to catch either the tone, the beauty or the epic nature of the series.

As somebody who has seen the entirety of the series you will likely be annoyed at the lack of detail and the lack of respect shown by the BBC in the creation of this.

As a potential new viewer of GoT I don't think this is the best way to get caught up or the best way to be introduced to the show. Better to just read the Wikipedia summary and/or watch previous episodes before starting season 7, I think.

GOT Tired?
dishlady6929 August 2017
I know "GOT" -- the reverse morality tale -- has been trending for the past few years, but I have to say I'm not impressed. The show itself is awful. The best thing about all seven seasons so far is the theme song (and great graphics on the intro).

Sean Bean -- AKA, the best of Season 1 -- doesn't last to the end of the season. His family -- the only quasi-moral characters of the series -- are broadly dispersed to be messed with and traumatized in their own ways, MAINLY by the evil Cersei and her minions. (No spoilers, but COME ON!)

The theme seems to be that good people will be punished... unless you have a dragon, then of course everyone roasts equally if you're not careful.

So many references to a "Mad King," but everyone in the show seems rather mad. Touched by all of the seven deadly sins -- as well as a few more sins the creative team just tossed in for good measure.

After the overdose of violence and inappropriate sexual acts carried out from seasons 1 through 7 the viewer is ready for the White Walkers to take over.

Warning: Spoilers
Do not believe any of those negative reviews. I honestly cannot understand why some reviewers have given this such a low rating. I think some people love the sound of their own voice and think their opinion is worth something and will be disagreeable simply for the sake of it.

Having said that, this show is stunning. I have never read the books and now I want to. There is so much crap on TV that is renewed year after year (CSI, House etc.) which uses cheap gags, pointless and sometimes ridiculous plots, unbelievable and many times one dimensional characters and yet all the truly great shows get cancelled.

There is enough brain-dead television. But once in a while a show comes along that transports you to another world and makes you believe in the magic of television again. Game of Thrones is one such show.

It is complex, multi-layered, surreal, vibrant, imaginative and it draws your eye in to the surprising level of detail, from the sweeping vistas, to the narrow dungeons, from the beautiful castles and magnificent trees, to the contrasting landscapes. It is worth watching just for the scenery alone.

Yes the acting seems a little cold and even wooden at times, but this is perfectly in keeping with the medieval look and feel of the show. Yes it is dark and gloomy, but again in keeping with the narrative.

The scripting is intelligent and well delivered by competent acting, led by Sean Bean perfectly cast as Lord Edard. Although Sean Bean is better known for brooding bad guys, he strikes the perfect balance between father, husband and Lord and soldier. He is well supported by other well known actors and many new to the scene.

After watching and sometimes enjoying Camelot, this show makes that one look more like "Merlin" by comparison. And where Camelot lacks in depth and scripting, Game of Thrones strikes the perfect balance between brooding medieval angst and wonderful fantasy story telling.

Perspective.

Warning: Spoilers
Yes, Ned Stark died before the first season ended. Yes Rob, his mother and his unborn child were all brutally murdered. Yes Dany had to murder her true love and give up her dream of conquering Westeros.

Tragedy happens in GOT much like it does in real life. And before you go a rate something 1 just because of the characters deaths angered you is foolish and here's why.

George R. R. Martin kills off characters to give the sense that no one is safe and that can happen to anyone at anytime, regardless of who they are where they're from etc. And through doing this subverts your expectations time and time again.

And you're being played by him, you're angry that your beloved characters have died and so give it the lowest rating on a site where the ratings are about as useful as it's game reviews. That's exactly what emotion he's going for, he wants to anger you and upset you in those moments, and by raging online about it and rating it 1, probably makes him happier more than anything else, as that's what he's going for, if a show can get you so incredibly angry you're obviously emotionally invested in the story.
