Main Page error reports

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 12:01 on 17 April 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed, determined not to be an error, or the item has rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

(pictured) was probably a bad call here; it gives the impression that Fleetwood Mac is known primarily as a two-member band. I don't have any strong feeling about the best fix, though. - Dank (push to talk) 03:53, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe "(two band members pictured)"? I see that you added this, Ravenpuff. Schwede66 05:18, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good suggestion, I've made this change. Stephen 05:54, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"band" is probably unnecessary here, but I agree with the change. I confess that I thought they were a two-member band. — RAVENPVFF · talk · 11:09, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Errors with "In the news"

The Børsen fire blurb should probably link "catches fire" to 2024 Børsen fire. Aaron Liu (talk) 01:21, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The fire article has fewer details than the main article. Stephen 04:57, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Can't we link it without bolding it? Also, the article has the details now Aaron Liu (talk) 11:05, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The first bullet is "The historic Børsen (pictured) in Copenhagen, Denmark, catches fire." This can be updated, since there is now an article about the fire (2024 Børsen fire) and we also now know that its spire fell. A rewrite:

Current DYK

The summary of the article about the lynching of Norris Dendy is incorrect. It falsely states that five men were indicted but not convicted. As the article makes clear, five men were charged but the grand jury failed to indict. A correct summary would be: "that five men were accused of lynching Norris Dendy but none were ever indicted?"Bill (talk) 01:37, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator here, @Billposer is correct - admins please feel free to make this change. PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 02:29, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In the first blurb about Ivanka Trump, I’d suggest linking first family to First family of the United States. Stumped me for a little bit trying to figure out what that meant when I first read it. FunIsOptional (talk) (use ping please) 03:08, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Whilst a change like this isn't uncontroversial, I consider that it makes sense. Many reader won't know what the first family is and a link is thus useful. If others disagree, please feel free to revert this. Schwede66 03:58, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Today's OTD

Moved from Main page talk:

Is it possible to add the half millennium anniversary of New York City?

The sharpest possible pinpointing of non-Native settlement of New York City is May 1624 no one knows the day but they first saw the land+great natural harbor about 100 years before: exactly April 17th, 1524. Maybe replace the French ship with this French ship? Sagittarian Milky Way (talk) 00:43, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

General discussion

April 10 OTD

I just want to say I appreciate that the April 10 OTD has a couple of "lighter" items (The Great Gatsby being published and Beatles breaking up). It's nice to see that it's not all doom and gloom. ~~ Jessintime (talk) 16:05, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Jessintime. To some, the Beatles breaking up might have been the worst news of 1970. Appreciate your feedback, though. Schwede66 19:01, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Capitalisation: "Main Page" vs "Main page"

Hello. I haven't done an exhaustive search of the archives so I apologise if this has been asked before. I did find a question from 2004 suggesting that the "P" in "Main Page" should be decapitalised; although I support that suggestion, that is not what I wish to discuss here.

My issue is with the inconsistency of the capitalisation. Whereas in most places, including the page's title, it is referred to with the capital "P" ("Main Page"), the link on the sidebar has a lowercase "p" ("Main page").

Is there a reason for this difference? With my current knowledge of the situation, I would suggest decapitalising this title everywhere; or, at least, capitalising the title in the sidebar to maintain consistency.

Thank you for your consideration. – Alisperic (talk) 07:57, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your recommendation. I have had a closer look at all of these discussions but I have not been able to find a satisfying answer to the question I posed here about capitalisation and the sidebar. Alisperic (talk) 12:17, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For previous attempt to capitalize the link in the sidebar, see MediaWiki talk:Mainpage-description. Page MediaWiki:Mainpage-description controls the text in the sidebar, as can be see from debug locale. —andrybak (talk) 16:50, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
