why did they cut Nie Mingjue body?
for some reason I don’t remember , like it was Meng Yao who did that or Nie huaisang? I know at the end he was a spiritual corpse but he even become one..? (Sorry if I didn’t explain well, this question just cross my mind)
(Edited post)‼️ Hey! I made this post yesterday and I just want to thank the people explaining what happened and more and I'm very thankful, just other thing please don't arguing about this topic. I know there is different opinions and all but please literally to the point of arguing and swearing at each other? Damn.
He became a fierce corpse post-death and burial. It’s never explained exactly when or how but via earlier drafts of the novel which were later edited it’s implied that he became a fierce corpse due to the heavy resentment he died with, broke out of his tomb, and went after JGY. At which point JGY cut him up and scattered the pieces to prevent the body from putting itself back together and continuing to come after him. You can read the original end of the Empathy flashback sequence here:

thank u sm!!!!
This is the original, MXTX omitted this from the final version for some reason so we don't know why or how.
Without this part in it I always thought it was more implied JGY thought ahead (pun intended) and knew it would happen (which is definitely more in line with his scheming) and cut him up and scattered his remains to stop him doing so in advance. This would certainly fit more closely with JGY being rather weak and unable to fight against fierce corpses NMJ as well - because I can't see him winning and being able to subdue him long enough to cut him apart otherwise. Considering the whole thing would have caused much commotion and people to wonder why he was after JGY as well. This could probably be why MXTX removed it from the updated version and the final version as well.
In the final version, JGY says that they saw NMJ buried and no one in the treasure room contests this claim. I struggle to imagine how he could have managed to pull off a body switcheroo like that without anyone noticing they were burying someone who wasn’t NMJ, especially because NHS and LXC were directly present at NMJ’s death.
While I don’t think JGY could handle fierce corpse NMJ on his own, he also likely would not have been on his own and without backup in a scenario where fierce corpse NMJ came after him. He had Xue Yang and potentially SMS around, and more importantly, he had the half of the tiger seal at his disposal, which he was later able to get enough use out of to control a ton of fierce corpses at the Burial Mounds. So I think the half tiger seal would be enough to subdue fierce corpse NMJ long enough to cut him up and suppress all of the pieces.
Yeah, you're right. Because he switched it after? Like in the dead of night? I wasn't claiming he switched it before they buried him lol.
While this is true, though I am not sure when XY managed to make the tiger seal work again, there is the huge fact a massive beefed-up corpse that looks just like NMJ is roaming around Golden Scale Tower. That would have turned heads. A fierce corpse like NMJ, without consciousness would not have the capability to go into stealth mode. He'd cause such a scene it's almost impossible to think that only just JGY and his possible two henchmen saw or heard him.
There is a reason it's not in the edited or final versions.
We don’t know what that reason is, and while the original Empathy ending scene was cut out, it does give insight into what the author was thinking regarding the issue that ultimately ends up being left ambiguous.
Anyway, I find the idea of JGY breaking into an already dead and buried NMJ’s tomb to cut him up and scatter him around and store his head in his closet just in case he might become a fierce corpse completely ridiculous. It’s just a stupid risk to take without necessity. Furthermore, this idea implies that the pieces of his corpse all turned to fierce corpse separately once they were already scattered and suppressed, which I’m not even sure is possible. And even if it is, the fact that JGY has NMJ’s head particularly so heavily suppressed suggests that it was already a fierce corpse and dangerous before it got stored in his closet, which is in line with the original ending of the Empathy flashback.
I think the main reason it’s not in the final version is probably because the scene requires Wei Wuxian to inexplicably see what happens after Nie Mingjue’s death during Empathy. But as you say, since it’s not canon to the final version, people are free to speculate.
Yeah I feel MXTX took it out because she realized it created some continuity issues
There are a lot of major differences between the first version and final version we have now.
Ironically the same thing is happening with the TGCF edits now except International fandom is more familiar with the unedited version of TGCF then they are with the unedited version of MDZS.
bangs pots and pans
And fun fact: NMJ had no way to know that JGY had killed him! So he became a fierce corpse and went after him because he just hated him that much!
that actually makes sm sense tbh-I knew that no way he could know he was killed/ JGY killed him so he went basically hunting him-
By the time he kicked JGY down the stairs (before JGY started playing Turmoil btw) NMJ was already full 'bitch eating crackers' mode about JGY, and Undead Da-ge just took that energy and ran with it
Yep! He just overheard JGY confiding in LXC how he felt about the things NMJ unequivocally did and said to him and got so mad about it that his Turmoil’d brain immediately went kill kill kill, kill Jin Guangyao.
makes me think of this post on tumblr lmfaoo
taps the sign
I guess JGY was right to be afraid of him wasn't he 🤷♀️
I thought those raised in cultivation clans had soul calming ceremonies or something as children specifically so they would not come back?
I don't know why people are arguing so much, but just to clarify.
The Nie have corpses about to turn buried with their swords, just to calm the resentment of the weapon and that was a secret. Their cultivation technique and the affect it has on them was a secret as well. We found this out during the course of the novel. Who's to say how they keep the actual Nie sect cultivators from turning also?
Yes, calming rituals are very much used in MDZS, but it obviously doesn't work on NMJ. They are directly affected by the cultivation method they use so it's completely different in their case.
MXTX took it out because they did not want the people who read the final version later to think this was the case, because it has PLOT HOLES - like how the hell no one else saw a corpse coming after JGY. It's really quite silly to think this would go unnoticed.
JGY knows NMJ is full of anger and resentment, he also directly manipulated this further until he died of a qi deviation. He knows NMJ has major anger issues and that he'd want revenge. It would be stupid of JGY not to think that NMJ would come back to seek revenge.
As for NMJ targeting JGY, the very last thing he saw was JGY looking down at him, who's to say he didn't realise it was somehow him? NMJ is not completely thick.
This makes the most sense. JGY is smart and he always thought many steps ahead he was also terrified of NMJ. He def wanted to ensure the corpse would never have a chance to come after him.
But how did his arm turn up? Is what I don’t recall.
I know right? JGY knew all about the sect's method and the issues with resentment and qi deviation, so he knew this was most likely going to happen. It's just logical thinking. Besides JGY is petrified of NMJ, of course he'd come to this conclusion and ensure there was no way he'd come back for him.
Well it's something we don't really know tbh. WWX speculated it was NHS and that he let it loose once MXY had brought WWX back, to get him on the case. While it definitely must have been NHS that did this, how he found out about the whole thing with JGY or even found the arm is a mystery I think!
Though I've seen some interesting speculations it was because NHS was a lover of the arts and eventually realised the music JGY had played was different. It doesn't mention he was a musician or enjoyed music, but it's assuming he might have due to his other interests.
Perhaps LXC played him the song to soothe him once NMJ had died and he realised it was different. I think that would be quite poignant considering NMJ was angry about him only having interests in the arts and stuff and it's what could have helped his brother figure out he was murdered. Just a theory, but I found it interesting to read!
That’s an awesome theory and makes sense! The arts saved them in the end lol
It's an interesting and fun one! I'd love that to be true haha. My headcanon now 🤣
thank u sm for explaining:) tbh i don’t know why are they arguing… ngl I don’t see the point of even arguing about this topic…
Me neither, some were just being rude and swearing which is uncalled for. A debate is fine, but I think there was a bit of targeting going on there.
fr?? Damn I didn’t want to anymore to argue and swear at each other- wow…
I think the soul calming ceremonies are used to prevent cultivators from turning into fierce ghosts ratger than fierce corpses. From what I understant, fierce ghosts are just souls without bodies and fierce corpses absolutely need bodies (souls are kinda optional I guess, since Wen Ning was a fierce corpse but still had his consciousness). So, the ceremony might have worked on NMJ.
Actually, from what I've noticed in the novel the terms 'fierce corpse' and 'ferocious ghost' seem somewhat interchangeable?! In all translations of the novel I've read, both these terms are used for the Mo family corpses WWX uses to fight the hand at the beginning. Which, I am I could be completely wrong and I'd love to know if I am haha.
But I would have thought that the soul-calming rituals helped keep the cultivators from turning into anything at all - because damn there would be some powerful fierce corpses wandering around if not lol. It does specify 'ferocious ghosts' when explaining about the ritual though. Curious!
